Hey, I'm working on rebuilding my Across due to low compression and currently replacing the piston rings. I was hoping to get some advice on what size I need as the service manual wasnt very helpful in this area. Also would I need to replace all rings or just the two compression rings? Thanks, Jordan
agreed, have you located a set of rings yet ?The part Number is 12140-05C00 , try Suziparts.com.au else there are some on eBay in the UK http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RING-SET-...50RK-GJ73A-GSX250F-GJ75A-ACROSS-/190734847925
Thats the plan, I'm more lost in finding new sets. I'm kinda trying to avoid purchasing the genuine parts.
Just sent off a couple of inquiries, hopefully I can find something a little more affordable. Thanks for the quick responses.
If u are searching ebay use ebay.com or ebay motors ..... brings up different results and sometimes alot more than oz ebay.
Wow, thats only just run in... it shouldnt need rings after 40,000 kms, have you had the shims done ? Cheers Chris
Hey Chris, When I preformed a leak down test all the pressure was escaping into the crank case with none that i could detect from the exhaust or intake. I also followed a friends advice to pour some kerosene onto the valves to check for leaks, which showed that they where fine. Let me know if I missed anything and if there is a method to check without reassembling the engine. Thanks, Jordan
How was the bike performing before? Was it blowing blue smoke, etc? Can you measure the rings currently to check if they are within spec? Thickness and ring end gap i believe - someone else may know more but that should tell you if they're worn....
Also put rings onto piston and check side clearance as too much will allow the rings to twist fractionally and not seal square to the bore or ring lands in piston.
Before pulling apart the engine there was no smoke coming from the exhaust. The only problem was that it was difficult from cold and maintain a steady idle. As far as I know it seemed to have plenty of power, alot more then my cm250. I have placed the ring in the cylinder earlier and measured that it was too big, can't remember exact numbers. I also can't remember if the Manuel shows any specs about thickness. As for side clearance, I'll take a look next time I'm working on the bike.
with the new 3 piece oil rings set the 2 scraper ring ends opposite to each other and in line with the piston pin.top ring end gap away from spark plug on piston pin line ,2nd ring end gap opposite, top oil ring opposite and bottom oil ring opposite.check end gaps with rings square in bores before fitting on piston.
I'm currently working on my honda as it only has two cylinders. Figured it would be cheaper and easier. It has the same problem. I'm not sure what you mean with the last sentence, do you mean putting the rings in the cylinder and checking the end gaps before installing? If so, already planing to Thanks for the tips
