Hey All I bought what I believe is a 1993 Bandit 250 the frame says GJ74a 1276XX, judging by the frame number its a GSF250R and is a late 1993 model, it has a replacement motor fitted which I belive is from a 1990 or 1991 bike the RH engine case has the 6 dimples so that tells me its a pre 92 jobbie. I know by reading the blurb on http://www1.synapse.ne.jp/s-hara/bandit/ban-spece.html that in 92 they changed the pickups, carbs and CDI to reduce the horse power so the I believe the reason my bike does not run is that it has a the 1993 model CDI that is not compatible with the pre 92 bandit engine and pickups. My CDI is marked 32900 - 11D10. Does anyone here have a pre 1992 - 45 horsepower Bandit would could help me with their CDI part number. I bought this as a parts bike, but its in bloody good nick, I would prefer to get her back on the road. thanks Chris
Nice looking bike. Have you checked the obvious stuff stuff like which order the spark leads are in? I know that my newer FZR engine ran fine with an older CDI, you could just take it past the engine's designed redline by 2,000 RPM.
its my understanding the ignition timing is different between the 2 engines, at the moment it sounds like it wants to start but wont, I believe I will need to find a CDI with the part number 32900 - 11D00
Nice, looks too good to wreck. Good luck with finding the right CDI. Should be a good little goer when your finished.
My bandit was a '92 and it had an aftermarket (derestricted) CDI. It still ran but due to compression we had to push start it. I'd give that a go to be honest, they're a bitch to start the first time but easier from then on. Very sensitive on the startup. We knew it was timed right, but there were valve problems preventing us from getting any further and I was sick of sinking money into it... you already know part of the story. Classic issue is plug order like has been said. I think mine was originally wrong too. I've still got most of my engine (although in pieces) so if you upload a pic of the pickup that's an easy way to tell the difference. If it's like mine it's a restricted one.
If it's anything like my 400 Bandit.....should be great bike. Sad they couldn't find a VC engine to replace the old one but must confess they are rare and a little hard to find.
Hey Phil The bike is not a V model, never was, it shipped as a 40hp Bandi from the factory, it now has an earlier model 45hp engine, just need to work out the electrics , plug order is correct Chris
From our conversation I gathered that the original motor was different spec....my bad. Hope you can source a cdi and with a bit of luck, get this one going.
Looking at the parts book I have, the trigger is the same for both models but the rotor is different. If that were the only difference then it should spark.
@bandithat has/had the part you are after. "With the New CDI arrived, I plugged it in and gave it a hopeful turn over before realising that it is for the wrong model. I bought wrong ass CDI like a goddamn idiot. 32900-11D00 instead of 32900-11D10. This cost me a good amount of time screwing around with the wrong part."
yep, I might have to contact @bandithat , I spotted a 2000 model crash damaged Bandit on Gumtree, no carbs, but had the CDI, I took and punt and talked him down from $300 to $125 and picked it up. When I plugged the CDI, the bike no longer had spark, put the one the bike came with back in and I had spark on all 4, its back firing yet the firing order is correct. Frustrated ..YEP
Push started it yet mate? We found mine hard to push start (they seem to be pretty sensitive) but once we did it the first time it got easier the subsequent times after that.... the starter motors seem to spin slowly but this bike wants the motor spun faster to get going - mine was like that, it seemed to be barely on the border line. If you've got spark, you can check fuel easily enough... check compression. In mine the valves were all leaking and needed to be recut - I've seen several of these bikes around with compression issues. If the CDI is sparking it may be the right one. Unless the timing has been messed with you shouldn't be too far off the mark. Here's mine before we wrecked it, reckon it was going to drop a valve at some point but gave it a bit of a run.
