    welcome along mate!!

you found a very nice 2KR, very clean!!! great little bike for your boy to learn on and they are great fun on a track also.......

i also was away from bike for a long time, not as long as most but 10 years is still long :) must say hopping on to a fzr250 was no where near as bad as i thought! its been heaps of fun, only down side is the peg placement. But that is minor.

here is the wiring diagram for the 2kr.

    hope it helps!

Bewdy Moo! Thanks for the schematics mate.

I took a leap of faith with the bike, Previous female owner etc etc and the bike cost $2600 plus $50 for the PO to ride it here.
Another $900 to get it to roadworthy including a full service by the local Yam dealer and rego so its basically a $4000 bike which IMO is a bit over the odds money wise BUT it has yet to disappoint and as its the Sons Id rather do it right first time.

I also looked at CBR-R's and a few Yam Zeals before the FZR as I was fixed on getting an inline 4 but the CBR-R's were all flogged out from what I could see and had big miles, the Zeals I looked at didnt quite feel right and I liked the Quad carby set up on the FZR's.

I think James will enjoy this bike well into his P's and when he is done with it I will take it off his hands.
    Tony

No worries mate, happy to help.
Yep the FZR's are normally less battered and bruised engine wise than the CBR's which is a bonus for us folk that want a good engine however they weren’t as well looked after as the CBR's I fear, most left in all conditions to rot, however you really look to have found a winner there and for what it stands you its definitely a reliable keeper. I don’t see much of a difference between the CBR and the FZR apart from the aftermarket parts available however with the FZR they have a lot of interchangeable parts between their bigger brothers the 400 and 600 so It’s not all that bad. Lovely bike to let loose on the track with also.
If you do consider keeping it and want to do a front break upgrade (from single disc to twin) let me know, I have all the parts you’ll need.
Best of luck with it to both you and your boy!

Thanks Moo and I noticed the thing was a bit under braked.
I had the front calipers overhauled and kitted as well as a flush when they fitted the new disk and pads which made a huge difference but its still lacking a tad with hard use so thats an upgrade for the near future.

I know the CBR's have timing gears instead of a chain and im wondering if the FZR's have gears or a chain as this one sounds slightly rattly when cold.

Either way the boy has been out on his bike all flaming day and clocked up nearly 200 km today alone so he obviously got the hang of the thing, Sounded far more confident when he took off too :)

timing chain it will likely be the CCT or cam chain tensioner as your source of the rattle

    Thanks Gents!
    Difficult repair?

Im tempted to source parts myself and then get the Yam dealer to fit them.

it shouldn't be, it depends if its an auto tensioner or not GreyImport is our resident fzr specialist and can most likely provide some insight. With the ZXR a simple remove and clean and put back together makes the world of difference to the noise

Ok so its a ratchet tensioner and once its full out its a new chain, guides etc.

Might be worth my sourcing the lot except tensioner and leaving it on the shelf just in case, Im not 100% happy with unknown eBay sellers with this stuff so any sources appreciated.

Im no stranger to buying stuff from the US as I regularly buy Volvo and Mercedes bits from 4 trusted suppliers and if possible I prefer to support friendly parts people even if its a bit more expensive.

And hell, its not my money im spending lol

Works on dirt bikes just fine!

Fat old blokes like me need an edge ya know!

Note the 2 Volvo's waiting to pounce?

BTW anyone riding down the eastern seaboard to the Moto GP , Superbikes or the Bazza Sheene ride has been right past my front door.

Well the bike is now a few weeks down the track and has another 800 km on the clock, I took him out and showed him a great bit of bike road (Grandridge road from Strzelecki Hwy to Hallston and Leongatha) which has just about everything fun on it and a very low amount of traffic and told him the training wheels were off and to go get some Solo bike time.
To James credit he isnt a fair weather rider and has been commuting rain, hail or shine and getting better and better on the bike.

    And today........ He dropped it.
No biggie, all unhurt apart from pride but he has buggered the lower fairing on the left and scuffed up the same on the right.

And it all happened when he honked into the driveway too quick and ran out of talent when he got unbalanced because he was worried about the traffic behind him.

100 Mile an hour tape will hold it with a few cable ties for now but we are now looking for a fairing kit..

    Clues?

    Yeahhhhhhh Nup.

Looked at both the sellers products and im not a huge fan plus its an 87 2kr and the closest fairing has Exup stickers.
One of em uses ABS plastic but id want a white one to get it painted and decaled so its a last resort.
The fairing thats on it now looks like the Add-Moto kit and its black plastic and nasty brittle stuff which leaves the neverland kit which im not 100% happy with.
