Hi all,

Boz invited me to join this forum and I am glad I to see all the FZR posts.

I've had my Fizzer for nearly 4 years.

Here is the post I placed on netrider.org.au this week.

Hi there,

2 months ago got hit by a car on Burwood Hwy, FTG. Broke collarbone spent a few hours in Maroondah hospital.

I'm back together again but my Fizzer 250 (2KR) has seen better days. Anyway, insurance paid me out and they let me keep my bike!

I would like to turn it into a streetfighter but don't really know how to go about it. I'm pulling the bike apart and would like to hear from anyone what you can and can't do and the rough cost <eek!> of things.

What parts can you powdercoat or polish (engine, frame, forks etc)

I am also trying to increase performance so does anyone recommend pipes and carbies for this Jap 4?

One more thing, can you use (3LN parts on the 2KR) I would like to install twin caliper brake system.

Cheers,

Ian

Oh - polishing - I know you can polish the rims (netrider have a good tutorial on how to do this: http://www.netrider.org.au/articles/?page=polished_rims). And I think James (jarmizz) may have polished his frame (same process as with the rims). He as a deltabox frame, but would also think that the steel 2kr frame would look nice polished on a streetfighter.

Hey there guys.

First off I would like to say sorry to hear about the crash then I would like to say STREET FIGHTERS ROCK!!!!!!!!.

Its not an easy job to build one. The tank, swing arm, frame, wheels, sub frame and engine can all be polished (engine would be chrome dipped) The site Boz gave you with the info on it can be use for polishing all of the above but as I said the engine will have to be chrome dipped by a electroplater. I polished my frame (3ln deltabox as Boz said) its very simple but takes a while but if done right looks the ****!!! I have seen a tank polished and I would really kill to do mine (not to sure what people would say) and it is very very simple also.

Engine wise I have seen FZR400cc engines fitted to the FZR250 frame. I see no problem in doing this conversion BUT it would take some smart engineering to fitt (easy pezie). You would maybe have to change a few things to get the chain running true to the rear sproket and up grade coils and eletrics to suit. I would love to do this as it would kick ass.

I read a article were a dude slamed a FZR600 engine into the FZR400 frame and on the track it was beating 900cc bikes so I see no problem with the FZR250 with 400 engine blasting away 600cc. Of course to beat 600s u need a real good tune with larger jets free flow muffler maybe some polishing in the head, hi compression head gasket. But if you wanna keep the 250cc engine you wanna slam in a race filter (cut to fit elements from ya local bike shop) get a custom made race muffle(not many pre made race mufflers around) then jet the carbs to meet with the exhaust.
Maybe gear the bike so it gets quicker take off, you could MAYBE source some race cams to introduce better lift ( I could maybe source this part if u cant). It would be exciting trying to get **** loads out of a small engine. I would maybe fit a 15hp NOS kit.

I would like to see pics of ya bike as is so i can kinda think of wjhat to do with the body work.
Email me at Jarmizz@hotmail.com

I got heaps of ideas

O yeal about the brakes source some 3LN wheels with discs the custom make a bracket for the extra caliper. That would be the simple way but I say leave the single front brake as it is very street fighter just polish the fark out of the brakes and she look the ****. I was just thinking it would be real fun to fit a single sided swing arm from a NC30 VFR. Sure it would take some fabrication to fit but it would be a fun job to do and would look the ****!!!! Any ways get hold of me and lets talk more!!!!!!

Thanks

Hi guys,

Thanks for the replies. I am slowly pulling the bike apart.

I live near FTG and Moto Yamha is my local YAM shop. Is $14AUD for gaskets reasonable or can you get them cheaper?

How do you know the forks need straightening?

When I stand behind handle bars the front tyre angles to the right, I can send a pic through. But maybe the forks are twisted slightly in the triple clamps and a wheel alignment is needed?

I just don't want to be ripped by a repair shop when I take the frame in.

Is a steering dampner do anything on the FZR?

Is OHLINS shocks worth putting on the bike?

Always more questions about this little but ace bike.

Thats a good price for gaskets but what gaskets are you talking about as I am sure that a head gasket is alot more expensive than a clutch cover gasket.

Your forks need to be fixed if your bike dosnt ride straight. If its really up set when riding. If the bars wobble alot more than before. If you have had a head on with somthing or the front has been smashed I would get a pro to look at it.

Ok with the wheel leaning to the right, I would say that the forks are bend and need a pro to look at them. This is important to get done correctly of you may smash ya bike again. Maybe the front of the frame where the head bolt goes through is bend but a pic would help alot more.

Steeing dampners help on every bike even a scooter but waht you have to ask is "does the FZR head shake anough to need one?" they are very expensive and to tell you the truth I have found that the fzrs never give problems. I have only had one problem and that was when I was doing 135km/h over a rise in the tarmac but u jump on a TL1000R with the dampner (they come standard on this bike) and it would do the same. The reason for needing Dampners is the amount of rake that the front forks are set at and the FZR is fine as it is.

Any upgraded suspension is work it BUT really only if your doing track work. I found that the FZR front forks need some larger shims to get rid of the softness and the rear shock needs a rebuld after 25,000kms and then its all good.
If you have **** loads of money any going to be racing then yes if your going to be riding it around on the road NO spend the money on a rebuld for rear shock and get some shims for the front forks. To do this to both would cost less then one Ohlins shock.

Hope that help alittle

Ian - you may also wish to drop by central motorcycles (in Hughesdale) - not the most convenient location from FTG, but better than the city. They are very good people there and have been able to get parts in for me at good prices. They are also very honest (at least they have been for me so far), and I would recommend them - especially if you are going to bring a bike in for a service.

I am not sure of the relationship you have with the people at yamaha in ftg, so obviously ignore this if it is a strong one. But if you want an honest second opinion these guys could be good.

I've been looking for a good mechanic. Bennet Bike Tune in Dandenong is good. I would stay away from Camberwell Motorcycles as it cost me a fortune last Christmas 2002 as this and that had to be replaced and I ended up fixing the main problem myself grrrr.

I've been to Central, a few years ago when looking for my first bike. Pretty down to earth blokes down there and friendly from what I can remember.

I will get the forks and frame looked at probably by Original Finish in Kilsyth. He fixed it last I came off all those years ago (ahh when I was a learner). Better to have someones expert eye rather than my learning and she'll be right attitude!

I am looking at powder coating or painting most parts and polishing the wheels and other bits. Thanks for the info will print and read through.

I am going to use Photoshop to do a concept picture of what the bike could look like, example colour scheme and graphics so I know what I should be aiming for. Will post when I get a chance.

Hi all,

Bike now getting some quote work done at Bob Martin Engineering in Ferntree Gully. Quick view by the dude down there has said that my forks are bent overall minor work to be done around $500 - $600 to have the frame straigtened and forks fixed. Also they will re-align wheels and also check them out for cracks.

I had given them the bike in a condition that has saved me cash....basically I pulled it down to just the forks, tyres, engine, carbies and the wiring harness.

Will know hopefully by Wednesday how much it will cost. Also FZR600 for sale at Clipstone Yamaha, checking it out soon.

Bye.
