Fuel Pump Questions

    Ok so I’m close to being ready.. just need to fix one minor crack in my fairing and I’m ready to register…

    Now the Question is… do I need to install a fuel pump before completion and how hard is it to install..

    The bike currently does not have a pump…. The Petrol goes from the tank to the tap to the filter to the carbs, I have had some trouble starting it the last few weeks and have to artificially add some fuel to the carbs….

    The fuel tank only had like 4-5 litres in it during the trail runs and I’m not sure if this is the problem, the filter had fuel in it but was never full, could there be air in the lines or was there just not enough fuel tank pressure… I was running the tap on reserve

    With a fuel pump, does it make the bike run any better, start any faster, etc etc, the local wreckers quoted me a ZX6R fuel pump for around 80 bucks, would this work, can this be installed easy, etc etc

    I’m real close and wonder if someone can offer me some advice with regards to a fuel pump, I tried a search of the forum and couldn’t get any real technical answers so I’m posting this…

    Advantages and installation help are the main reasons and I’m hoping for some great Yamaha Advice..

    Get a pump. The bike was designed to have one.

    Whilst not quite as mission critical as a pump on an FZR1000... the bike was indeed designed with one and as such i believe it's probably best if it did have one. The difference in range will definitely be noticed, aswell as more reliable power delivery even towards the end of the tank. Without a fuel pump you'll find yourself swapping to reserve even with 3-4 litres left in the tank.

    Installation is a pretty straight forward thing. Re-tuning the carbs to compensate for the fuel pump is the complicated bit!
    Without the pump the carbs will have been setup to run a tad on the rich side; with the pump the carbs will run extremely rich! Your most likely going to need to raise the clips on the needles one or even two notches, lean out the idle mixture a bit, aswell as a full clean and balance whilst your at it.

    If these are not things your comfortable with, for the time being it might be worth cutting your losses and accepting the poor range and inability to use a 'full' tank.

    Hey,

    whered u get a price of $80? Vicmotorcyclewreckers wanted $150 for a 2nd hand one. Does anyone know what pressure these things pump out? As what im guessing is just a good low psi car one would be good?

    as koma said, its not that critical. but yes you will likely have to switch to reserve earlier (but then id rather that than burning out another fuel pump, wqhy do you think it died?)

    Retunung the carbs shouldn't be necassary if your carbies are in good order(leaking seats, sticky slides). As with all fzr's that i have seen to date, it is most likely in need of a good tune up. I would recomend a full service and a carbie clean out.

    Cleaning out of the carbs is not a difficult job, but can be very time consuming and a little fiddly and you will need a compressor to do the job well. It sounds like you are mechanicaly competant so you should be able to do it.

    If your not to confident you can get it done by your local mechanic. It may cost a fair bit though, as it is time consuming, and not work that bigger workshops like to do. A friendly backyard mechanic may be able to help you. I recomend this guy, SOBIL 0434 090 133 he's in melb and if you drop your bike off he can give it a good going over for you. ;)

    Haha it all makes sense now. I was wondering why i was only getting 100km to reserve on a 3ln yet only filliing up 8 litres at the pump. And i thought i was getting crappy consumption. Any ideas on where i can get a decent but cheep pump from?

    a friendly wrecker will do you a good price on a second handy, make sure you get a rotary pump, i didn,t and bought a generic diapham pump and it just help the seats open, too high on the pressure i guess.

    Just a quick update,
    Its only taken me a year but i finally got around to buying a fuel pump. $80 from the wreckers. Wow what a difference it makes, Power the whole way through the band because i was leaning up to much over 8k revs. Seems my bike wasnt even close to being tuned for gravity feed.

    Hey guys just wondering, the fuel tank for the 3ln is 12+2 litres right? Does that mean when it runs out i should be filling up a full 12 litres, because once i hit reserve i'm only filling up just under 10 litres.
