I need a new front brake disc for my 2kr (single disc model) - the old one is warped and using the front brake is like taking hold of a jack hammer.
I was quoted $200 + $70 labour just to grind the old one and fit new pads, seems a bit excessive and I thought it might be cheaper just to get a new one and fit it myself. Any ideas on price/availability/location of a front disc for the 2kr?

you could just get one from the wreckers.

I needed one for my 3Ln, and the wreckers quoted me 175 for one. Doesn't look too bad to replace it yourself either.

Check the buttons between the disk and the carrier. They're very prone to rust on the 2kr. A bit of movement with channel locks and some WD-40 freed mine up a bit. They're supposed to move a slight amount on the floating disks. Once they start rattling though, it's time for a new disk.

check out awesome discs in Ringwood - they will machine their own discs to suit and only need to measure the current disc. They have been recommended by a few people as having good products and service. One person was quoted about $125 per disc including wheel removal and refit.

    Contact details for awesome discs:
    13/13 molan st ringwood 9879 7755

The only negative I have heard is that you need to work to their time schedule. It took one person 4 days to get his disc (promised in 2), and after he picked it up and brought it home - as he was fitting it himself - he found out it was the wrong size. A few days later he finally got the disc he needed.

That was the one negative comment - most others have had positive experiences. Chances are if you let them do the fitting for it then it will be ok.

As for brake pads - you can probably expect about $30-40 for the pads for the front. You can fit them yourself - takes about 1-2 hours the first time.

thanks for the replies. Boz i will look into the place in ringwood - bearing in mind i'm a LONG way from there. Still if they can make up a disc to fit i'd be happy to go out there and get it measured and then pick it up for that sort of price - i'll keep you posted.

netrider people may have a better idea of other places to look too. I really only know the East / South East of Melbourne.

ok i spoke to a guy at awesome discs and they can grind the old disc straight for around $120 so that sounds good. But I've got to get the thing off the wheel and take it in there so this leads onto a new question:
Is there an easy way to get the front wheel off without a proper stand? And that won't drop the bike on the forks? I know I've got to rig up some sort of front wheel lifting gizmo but has anyone got any ideas - i want to have a crack at this tomoroww. That brake shudder is giving me the sh#ts.

You could try Koma's trick and have some sort of sling attached to a ceiling / roof.

Alternatively you can put some blocks etc. under the engine of the bike (simulate a centre stand) and weigh down the rear.

final installment on this ongoing saga - all is SORTED. Thanks boz for the info on awesome discs - i took the disc in and they machined it for $90 within a couple of hours (they do seem to run on their own time up there though - i turned up at 10:30 monday morning and the whole place was shut up - after they had told me to show up any time!! eventually they turned up) - as opposed to quote from mechanic ~$270. Replaced brake pads myself, got wheel back on (in the dark and the rain mind you) after a few hiccups - took the bike for a quick run today, brakes smooth as silk. Love a happy ending <!-- s:D --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_biggrin.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy" /><!-- s:D -->

By the way, i went for the "couple of blocks under the engine" method of lifting the front wheel - works ok if you have someone else on hand.
