This is mainly intended for boz, or anyone else that can help me out.

Boz, u mentioned in the technical section ages ago that there were 3 types of fzr's

1hx, 2kr and 3ln.. U also said the 2kr and 3ln both have exups. Mine is registered, and labelled as a 2kr...1988, however Im not sure if it has an exup or not. How do I check properly? Also, the inlet manifolds that I replaced has 1hx written on the tops..however they were 2kr inlet manifolds..maybe the 1hx's are just the same im not sure..but I am 90% sure its a 2kr, because thats whats stamped on the compliance plate.

A few ways. First - when you turn on the bike (not start) you should hear a slight 'whirr' that is not your fuel pump (the pump tends to be more of a tapping). The whirr would be the servo motor 'cleaning cycle'. Another way is to put it on the side stand, and have a look underneath/beside the stand. You should see a metal covering where the 4 headers all join into 1 exhaust with two cables entering it. This would be the exup valve.

Likely is a 2kr, because I had never seen / heard about someone actually owning the pre 2kr model until Tanya announced hers. From what i have been told and seen, all fzr's share the same '1hx' engine so perhaps this is also written on various parts as well. It is also possible that the pre 2kr model and the 2kr model share many parts, and this could have been a replacement from the other model. I should also state that I am not 100% sure on the designation of the pre-2kr model. I know there are 2kr's adn 3ln's, but not sure about the others (I assume it is 1 something...)

Ok thanks man. There is definetly a sound when u turn the key over..that can last up to like 5 seconds....But as I said..I just thought that might have been the fuel pump...Ill have a look for the valve thing under the stand.. :p. So does Tanya own a 2kr or a 1hx? I thought she said a 2kr, coz hers is the same year as mine..

Ok guys, after reading that post i went downstairs and checked my compliance plate and it does say 2kr. But it also definelty pre exup. I got Tony Bogaart from Cycletune to look at it (he does a lot of import bikes) and he says that my bike never had the exup. When u turn the key the only noise you hear is the fuel pump, and there are no metal plates or cables running from the exhaust or metal plates. Maybe it was made very early 88 before they implemented it. Boz, If you want i can take a close up photo of the exhaust and send it to you no problem.
I actually think it's cool to have a bike that's a little bit diiferent.. and hey it's one less thing to go wrong!!

Tanya - no reason to take a photo - don't know what I would do with it honestly. I didn't know the designation of what I thought to be a pre-2kr (i.e. the model without exup). I guess what it means is that they are both 2kr models, but there are some with and others without exup. Learn something everyday!

yeah I id say mines the same as Tanya's. Maybe the 1989 2krs have exup and the 88 model ones dont?

Grendal, pity you're in Vic, we could get the bikes together and have a look at them. When I was told my bike had exup, I nearly drove myself crazy looking for it.. my other half said it didn't have one, (gee i hate it when he's right) and i ended up thinking because it had been dropped on that side it must have been removed. It wasn't until 2 different mechanics who looked at it told me it didn't have one to start with that I got over it. Not having it doesn't seem to affect the bike, it still goes well, drags off all posers in cars and importantly is faster than friends CBR250RR <!-- s:) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!-- s:) -->

the exup really only helps with down-low power (sub 8000 revs). Above 12 000 revs the valve is totally open, so any bike (exup or not) would act just as well. Most people who race remove the exup and put on a light-weight exhaust - can reduce the weight of the bike by 12 kg. (between 8-12000 revs I really couldn't compare...)
