Yamaha gearboxes are pretty damn bulletproof things! It'd have to had been in pretty bad condition for a mechanic to turn it down because of the gearbox! Seriously, of all the things you hear about various bikes... have you ever heard a common complain about Yamaha gearboxes? (Kawasaki 2nd gear, definitely a recurring one... )

Also, was that the only engine you had available to you? I know it's not particularly helpful seeming as you've already bought it, but it lists no km's (not even approximate), gives no details as to the bike it was in, and running gear is 'optional' !? Did you contact the seller about the engine when you mechanic had turned it down to question the label of 'good running condition'?

Just trying to help out here - i know if i were in this position i'd be wanting blood (or atleast a running bike).

In response to your post Koma, I chose that engine because in comparison to the 1300 dollar option, no one told me the em em ess engine had the top end rebuilt.

I also failed to call MMS to confirm.

If I had my time again, I would of trusted the mechanic on his feedback that the engine was fukt (fair cop) and then trusted his decision to purchase the one from em em ess spares.

Had I of done that, the engine would of had a top end rebuild and a 1000km 1 month warranty and come back before 1 month possibly.

Having said that, its my fault that I did not check into the $1300 dollar option.

I made life hard for the mechanic by choosing the crap engine.

He did his best to sort it out but at much detriment to both our nerves.

I have decided to keep the bike in the long term now.

I am hanging out for July next year when I will buy a newer bike, >2003 with less km's and far more powerful.

Yep, second gear engagement dogs on the FZR 1000 are pretty weak. The soultion for us, is to use a YZF 750 6-speed gearbox as a really good fix.

Update :: Update Update :: Update Update :: Update Update :: Update

Went for a big ride yesterday (Windsor, Pitt Town, River Rd, Wisemans, Spencer, Peats Ridge, RW, F3 to Castle Hill and home) (~2-300 km I think with extended freeway run at 140km/hr)

Bike seems to be running like a Swiss clock

Happy as a pig in the proverbial sh*t.

Yep, the "engine in the bike when I bought it" is sitting in my garage.

The original engine from e-bay was returned to the wrecker. (mechanic did not like it)

The second one provided under warranty is currently in the bike.

All running gear from original engine is currently utilised on the bike.

@bizz: Yes, I was pretty stoked.
