First thing I would do is change the oil filter .......and replace all the oil.....what oil are u using?

Check the oil level via the sight glass ( low on the right side of the motor )

If its a 3LN1 (Deltabox frame, twin front discs) you need to remove the headers to get at the filter cover .

Also check the oil level sensor next to the filter cover (It looks like this http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Yamaha-F...rcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item35c085cade ) and that the wire from it is not disconnected or damaged.

First thing to remember is that the FZR250 oil light is driven by a LEVEL switch, not a pressure switch. LOW level brings on the oil light.

I thought u missed my post

Sure its fine that u put in 2 litres and u can drain 2 litres but is that oil flowing around the motor?

Again Ill say ..... change the oil filter for starters and while u are at it remove the oil sensor and see if its damaged.

Again have u checked the wiring for the sensor? Is it plugged in? ...is the wire bent and therefore could be broken internally?

Again can u see the oil in the sight glass?

Again what type of oil are u using?

Start with the simple and easy things first

the sensor was plugged in, the wires are intact and not kinked and i could see the oil in the window and have now drained it. i will replace the oil and filter in a couple days and check the sensor for damage at the same time as i have not yet removed it. i do not know wich wieght oil to use, but will check with the shop to make sure i purchase the correct one. i will post a reply as soon as i have completed these things. cheers dylan

If the oil sensor is unplugged the the light should not be illuminated. If it is on, you have a short in your wiring somewhere.

My oils light used to come on at odd times, I think it was when I was going up my driveway (very steep) and hit the brakes to stop.

like i said befor had drained the oil. iv checked the sensors by pulling them out when it was drained looked to be in good condition.replaced old oil filter.changed the oil/sae_30 is what i put in it.oil is visible in window. when bikes on its stand it sits at over half the window.and just over the top ov the window when the bikes strait up and still got the oil light on

OK disconnect the wire off the sensor and see if the light goes out.

(when red wire connected)red oil light go's on arfter the ignition is on but only when you hit the start button to start it (when red wire disconnected)red oil light go's on as soon as you turn on the ignition...not sure if this helps but green neutral light stay's on thought out both, connected and not connected.

Good point - perhaps the OP should strip and clean the Start button.

Key on = red oil light on and green neutral light on

Kill/start switch on = red light off ,green light on, fuel pump prime, exup motor sets valve.

Sounds like your wiring is wrong/damaged ....check the loom from the right hand switchgear and then as Don suggests ,the kill/start switch needs a look at ....as after 20+ years it may be full of corrosion and crud.
I would remove the whole thing and open it up and clean and put a bit of something like WD40 in there.
Be careful when u dismantle as there are lots of bits inside and remember how it goes back together!

I disagree; the neutral light comes on with the key and stays on whenever - and only if - the transmission is in neutral. There is no test function of the neutral light.

The low oil level light only comes on while the start button is pressed (key and kill switches on, obviously).

The fuel pump primes and the EXUP valve goes through its clean cycle when the key and kill switch are on; the start button is not involved in these functions.

Yea sorry you are correct !.........Im doing 10 things at once here ..... the start button shouldnt be included in my summation!

Key on = red oil light on and green neutral light on

Kill switch on = red light off ,green light on, fuel pump prime, exup motor sets valve.
