    Is this serious, or does it happen regularly?

    I'm only riding my bike since September, so I don't have a huge amount of experience yet.

    Basically, I was driving along and kicked into second gear. When I released the clutch and gave it gas, it revved high like it was in neutral then cut out. I pulled over and noticed that my chain had come off (but was not broken). Luckily I was near home and wheeled it back. I put the chain back on by hand myself, and drove around the estate. It seems ok but when I release the clutch, it makes a rattle.

    Does this type of thing happen regularly, or should I be worried about it?

    Thanks.

    The rattle when you release the clutch is normal but the chain derailing isn't.

    Mats right, its not normal. I think maybe your chain is too loose (like crazy loose?). From memory it should have about 1cm swing each way maximum. I'm almost positive its detailed in another post if you search it. If you cant find it, let us know, and I'll post again. ;)
    Try not to ride around too much till you fix it. if it gets caught on the front sproket and spins you could be in for some serious damage, or injury.
    Not cool.
    As for the rattle. hmmm... how loud a rattle? I dunno how normal that is either. Might be a question for someone more experienced to answer. Sorry I cant help you with that one.

    yeah i also have about 10mm play in the chain.
    how often you lube your chain and what with can also contribute
    to check your chain pull on the chain at the verry end of your rear sprocket if you can see a big gap im pretty sure that means the chain is rat shite and you need a new chain and sprocket!
    other than clean the chain thorughly with kerosine put a little greas on there and use a good quality chain lube.
    (if anyone can correct me on any of this please do so) <!-- s:D --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_biggrin.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy" /><!-- s:D -->

    Thanks lads. I got a mechanic friend of mine to have a look. The chain was way too loose, and he showed me how to adjust it. I must admit that I had ignored the chain since I got the bike, but my lesson has been learned.
