Hey guys, New to the forums - hoping for a bit of advice. Started having battery problems with my 1990 CBR a week or so ago, soon realised that the battery was not being charged while riding. The voltage of the battery definitely dips when the bike is turned on, which to my mind shows the bike is entirely dependent on voltage from the battery to run the electrics. From my understanding, this would point to a problem with the regulator-rectifier or stator. I unplugged the r/r and checked the diodes with a digital multimeter - everything was sitting at about 0.480V (similar to what I've seen in videos). Then I started the bike and tested the wires coming in from the stator at the r/r plug while idling. AC voltage across the first two wires was 6V, across the first and third was 8V and across second and third was 15V. This seems low compared to a few videos I watched - the voltage does increase with revs but the 6V and 8V lines are always lower than the 15V one. So I'm inclined to think there's a stator issue...what do you guys reckon? Also checked from positive DC output terminal at r/r plug to positive terminal on battery for continuity and it was all good...is there something else aside from the stator and r/r that I should be testing? Finally, if I need a new stator - any advice as to the best place to get one in Sydney? Sorry for the longwinded question, would be super grateful for any advice.
you can get a 2nd hand stator for about $80 - $100 or find someone who rewinds them, stator rewinds are much more expensive but better in the long run as you know its been done properly. If you get really stuck for one, I have a spare bike I can pull one off for you Good on you for checking the reg , 9 times out 10, its the reg , alas your issue looks be the stator
Cheers for the quick reply! I've posted up a part request through findapart.com.au - one guy got back to me with a price of $275...will have to look into the rewind and see what the price difference is. Thanks for the offer of a spare too, btw - I'll let you know how I get on.
Here is a cheap one, don't know what the quality is like. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/261928343947?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT Most rewinds I have found to be around the $300 to 500 mark.
Found a genuine Honda stator at a wreckers in SA, posted express and arrived yesterday - $65 total. Pretty stoked. Now I just have to find some way to remove the oldest gasket known to mankind and we'll be in business... Very impressed with findapart.com.au - saved a lot of time and didn't have to go looking up contact details of different wreckers. Thanks again for the advice guys!
