Hi guys, I'm having trouble getting my zxr250a to run properly after I gave it a freshen up. I can't get the cam marks to line up properly. If I line up the exhaust mark with the head then count 29 pins the intake mark sits below the head and it won't run at all. Move the intake one tooth forward the mark sits just above the head and it runs, like ****.
    Any ideas????
    Thanks

180 out? Double check the procedure for setting timing, especially the TDC.

Post up some pics mate so we can take a look and offer some advice. If you're not taking the slack out properly even if you get the timing right it will move and skip a tooth when you rotate it. Slack should be all on the intake side not the exhaust side so it's taken up by the CCT, hence try putting the exhaust cam on first and making sure the chain is tight on the cam.

After you set the timing, put the retainers back on, tighten it up through the CCT etc you should rotate the engine several times and get back to exhaust TDC to ensure the timing is still correct.

have you got the right cams in place, from memory the exhaust cam has an extra ring to help identify it.

All double checked and right I'll upload some pictures soon, but I've found the problem. No bang on number one

Hmm... I don't have a ZXR but the Honda I had with similar marks looked like this when correctly timed...
    IMG_1953.JPG

Rocking the cams back and forth saw the lines almost perfectly horizontal. Always hard to tell from photos but yours looks a tooth out... perhaps on both cams. Could be wrong though, never done a ZXR. If you look at the "tilt" on the "EX" and "IN" markings notice on mine how they are the same on both cams ie they are leaning the same direction but yours isn't. That adds to my thoughts it may not be right.

No bang on number 1, is the coil lead and spark plug cap okay ? if you ground a plug on the head and hit the starter, can you see spark from number 1 ?

Yep thought it would be something similar. But look closely at yours. Your "IN" lines for the cams are not aligned. If you look at mine, see how they all lean the same way? It looks to me like you need to move the exhaust cam 1 tooth clockwise. It also looks to me like you have 28 teeth between the lines and not 29 like the manual (It looks like 29?) which backs up what I am thinking...

I would also be comparing the intake "line" on the intake cam to the intake "line" on the exhaust cam. It looks like you are comparing an intake line and an exhaust line. Just my opinion but happy to be corrected by other ZXR owners...

The spark issue was just a plug, I replaced it and it was much better. I think I'll replace the leads and plugs anyway just to be sure

Yea your right about the teeth there's 28 not 29 it was the closest I could get it to the diagram. I'll move this afternoon and see if it makes a difference
