i own a across not an fzr but i can tell you 100% yes there is a problem with you fzr, its unroadworthy if you break light dont work when the rear break is pressed, no big deal, should be a cheap and easy fix, maby you wont have to spen anything at all,

boz would be the man to ask here

Why me? I never told people abouy my brake light troubles... Except the trouble I had with my rear brake light was that it was constantly going on and off...

First - the rear brake activates the brake light by a little switch located just inside the frame and up (higher) than the brake peddle itself. On my bike the peddle to the switch is connected by a spring (this is common, but I have also seen on non-fzr's a type of rubber band being used). What is supposed to happen is when you push the brake the spring (or band) pulls on the switch which is at the other end. After this the light goes on.

What used to happen on my bike is that if I went over any minor bump on the road my brake light would flash on/off - this is because the spring was too tight, and as a result the switch was almost always near the on position.

What can also happen is that the spring is too loose, and thus when pulling the pedal there is not enough force going through the spring to pull the switch.

    Things to do:
    1) Check the spring. You can pull down on it by hand, and if the bike is on (doesn't need to be running) the rear light should go on. If this happens it simply means the spring is too lose. You can tighten this yourself (just make it shorter by making a bigger hook on the bottom). It is also possible that you will need to replace this spring you can use a generic one from a hardware store - just make sure it is about the same length (you can always stretch springs a little so better to make it a bit shorter if in doubt) and make sure it is stainless steel or another non-rustable material. When/if you replace the spring make sure it isn't too loose or too tight otherwise you either won't have braking activated, or it will be flashing over every bump (you may need someone to watch you ride down a street to check this second one). If you don't see a spring - take a look at a friends bike to see where there should be one, and you may just need to buy a new one. You should still be able to see the switch and you can 'pull' that to see if it will turn the brake light on (when bike is on of course)

    2) If when you pull the spring (or even pull the switch if you want to be sure) the rear light doesn't go on then there is likely something to do wtih the wiring. You can probably trace this through by using a voltmeter if you wish.

    Light

I have got the same answer as Boz. If your rear bike light isnt working it means that it shouldnt be on the road. Get out the voltmeter and check over it. It should be easy to find the fault.
