    Hi FZR Users.

Recently i was given a FZR250 from a friend that was not working. I dont really know much about the workings of bikes or fixing them, but i have a friend who has tinkered with them a little bit and we have done some diagnosing and i was wondering if you ppl would be able to help or shed light on whats going on.

Currently the bike wont start but will turn over. Also when trying to start fuel comes out of an overflow pipe.

    Also:
    - Airbox to carburettor inlet trumpets were just sitting onto and were not clamped on
    - Fuel pump is working, but overflows straight out of the overflow pipe between cylinders 1&2 carburettors
    - Spark on all 4 spark plugs OK
    - Engine winds over on starter moter but doesn't fire
    - Engine fires with raw fuel down throat of all carburettors but won't continue
    - Slides in top of carburettors were initially stuck, but of force freed them up, but not moving with throttle or choak. Should these be moving?
    - Didnt do compression check or roll start.

    Would love some help
    Cheers

You have already identified two major problems - Fuel overflowing and it runs with fuel in the throats..

Strip and clean the carbs ! Your answer is there...

Ok, sounds like your on the right track...
The thing that immediately rings alarm bells for me is when you said "Also when trying to start fuel comes out of an overflow pipe. "Assuming when you described the location of the overflow as being "between cylinders 1&2 carburettors then i'll be the first to say i'm not aware of any overflow in that location!

If the carb slides were seized then it's a fair bet that the carb internals are gunked and sludged to buggery! Time to clean them thoroughly, then repeat a few more times for good measure.
Check that the balancing tubes are connected properly (one between 1&2, 3&4, and then one between both of them... kinda 2&3).
Make sure all rubbers (carb boots) are sealed properly and clamped onto both the engine and the carbs.

"Slides in top of carburettors were initially stuck, but of force freed them up, but not moving with throttle or choak. Should these be moving?"
The carb slides won't move at all unless there is vacuum being generated by the engine cranking over. If you try and start the bike without the airbox on you can watch the carb slides as you try and start the bike. As soon as you crank the engine over they should start to jitter open slightly. As you wind on the throttle and the revs rise (if you can get the engine running) then you'll see the slides be drawn open fully from the increase in vacuum.

I'd recommend starting off with a complete tear down of the carbs to ensure they're in a functional state; which means no torn/broken rubber and everything immaculately clean and moving smoothly. Also it would be worth checking the valve clearances to make sure your not flogging a dead horse. <!-- s:wink: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_wink.gif" alt="" title="Wink" /><!-- s:wink: -->
