My Barry Sheene Festival of Speed Trip

Just before Xmas I was looking for ideas for a gift for my Dad (Phil, he is a mod on here), we share an interest \ passion for Motorcycles and I thought a trip to Sydney to see the Barry Sheene Festival of Speed was a good idea, my lovely wife said yes and 2 plane tickets were purchased. I then made contact with Mboddy who said he was racing there and let him know we were coming, several PM's were exchanged and Mark kindly offered to share accommodation and provide some passes to the event, this was getting better by the minute !!! I gave Dad his gift on Xmas day and he was pretty stoked, however we had to play the waiting game, but it was a goer !!!

We flew down to Sydney Friday morning and took a train from the airport then headed out to Liverpool which was close to the motel, a quick Cab ride and we were there, bags were dropped and passes collected and we made our way to the Eastern Creek (Sydney Motorsport Park) and made a bee-line for Garage 27. It was then we were introduced to Mark Boddy and his brother David and 3 well presented Yamaha 2 strokes. The crowds were down as Friday was a practice day but we were front and centre in pit line while Mark fired up his TDR250, RD250LC and his TZR250 for practice and qualifying . We were also introduced to Mark's mates Terry with a TZR250 and a RD250LC, David with his Suzuki T500 and AJ who was pit crewing.

I was blown away how well the event was run, sirens sounded and riders were in the seat heading down pit lane. Having only watched Motorcycle racing on television, I was amazed how cool it was to be in the pits for this sort of event. While the guys were turning in laps, I took the opportunity to get a few photos, my mate from Brisbane lent me a 100-400mm lens and I hit headed off down pit lane to check out the 2 wheeled talent and get some photos. What blew me away was how friendly everyone was, riders and pit crew alike were super keen to talk about their bikes and the event, I managed to meet quite a few Queenslanders who had travelled down for the event. One of the Yamaha RD250 LC's in garage 27 had suffered a failure and everyone pitched to diagnose and rectify the problem, it’s amazing how many spares were floating around, the camaraderie between riders was fantastic to see. In the afternoon some wet weather blew in, so we helped Mark and David fit a set of wets and he was of for his final practice run. About 6 pm, we packed up and headed for the motel, then over the road to the pub for a quick feed then off to bed.

On Saturday morning we were up bright and early and headed back to Eastern Creek, there were a few more punters around and the after a riders briefing, the racing started in earnest. I have to tell you that 20+ 2stoke weapons launching off the line was a sight to be seen (and heard), I was in bike heaven. While the guys raced in their various classes and I headed around the track taking photos. being in the pits was  sool fricken cool, I spent quite some time talking to Terry who had 2 shiny Yamahas he was racing, I was blown away how much detail and effort he had gone into preparing his bikes.  I stopped by and said hello to Jeff Ware from Rapid Magazine. After lunch there was heaps more racing and it was great to see Marks lap times dropping, he was 4 seconds quicker than practice the previous day. About 5.00 pm, we packed up and headed for the motel, and again over the road to the pub for a quick feed then off to bed.

Sunday was the big day, we arrived bright and early and the racing started, the 2nd race of the day, a rider had a major spill coming onto the straight and was taken to Hospital. Soon after the racing was back on, throughout the day I went to different spots on the track to get some happy snaps with my 100-400 lens.  I met up with Richard Collins who was at the Rapid stand and had a good chat with him. As Sunday was the big day for spectators, the event organisers had arranged a show and shine, I made sure I took plenty of happy snaps as there was some real eye candy there.  Finally as the afternoon wore on, we had to make a move to make it back to the airport, we caught a cab from Eastern creek and arrived at the Airport with an hour to kill.

So what did I think of the event, quite frankly it was bloody fantastic!!!, I was able to see a myriad of classic and not so classic racers turning in laps, it’s so much better in person than on TV. This was an experience I will never forget, I can’t thank Mark, David, Terry, Aj and David for their hospitality and welcoming us into the garage, we so very much appreciated it.  What I also took away from the event is that without spectators, these events will slowly fade away, its costs a small fortune to host a 3 day event like this and the organisers rely on the spectator paying gate fees  to help cover the costs. If you see an event like this advertised, why not head on down for a look, and hopefully you will be blown away as I was, who knows maybe that little voice in your head might crank up and say..."let’s go racing".

Does anyone have a RD250LC or TZR250 for sale; I think I’m in the market for a race bike 

Excellent write up Chris. It was great having you and Phil join us and be a part of Team Penrite Oil for the event.
Love your photos. Particularly the one where I am chasing down the little Honda MTR125 on the TDR250.
We all had a fantastic time.

Result wise I am very happy. Got my times down to 1:59 on the RD250LC, 1:56 on the TDR250 and 1:55 on the TZR250.
Four 2nd places on the TDR250 won the 2nd place trophy for Period 6 (New Era) 250cc Production.
Four 2nd places on the TZR250 won the 2nd place trophy for Period 6 250cc.

My team mate David R who could not make it to the meeting is currently building a couple of TZR250s to Period 6 Production specifications.
One will be based on my bike and he will race it. But the other one is to sell.
It has a freshly rebuilt F3 spec engine, Ignitech programmable ignition, Lomas pipes and will be ready to race.

Maybe next year you can join us at the BSFOS as a racing member of Team Penrite Oil.

    Hey All      :occasion14:

Having moved back to the Sunshine coast a week prior to the journey to Sydney I have been deprived of the internet until this morning. Just wish to add my 2 bits worth.
1st up, my eternal gratitude and thanks to my son Chris (KIFFSTA) for the greatest Christmas present ever. Certainly well worth the wait. I won't cover what Chris has already posted, instead just what I took from the event.

Arriving at Eastern Creek by cab, I could hardly contain my excitement and exited the cab ready to get amongst it. We headed straight for garage 27, warmly welcomed by Mark and his brother Dave. Perused the bikes and meet other riders from our Nations Capital, Canberra was well represented and posted some excellent results.

Friday was a preparation day for many, our host Mark was well and truly ready and activity in the pit was checking that tire warmers were on and tire inflation correct, these bikes were ready to go. Wandered around and found many garages a hive of activity with engines being dismantled, clutch plates being replaced and general full on
activity. The esprit of cooperation and camaraderie couldn't be missed, felt good.

Stood in pit lane and watched the 250cc class have a run was fun. First the scream of 2strokers closely followed by the cloud of smoke, Does it get any better, not for me!
Nothing beats the smell of 2 stroke, any time of the day. Chatted to many people, from all parts of Australia and NZ, Queenslanders galore. Great 1st day.

Day 2 was great as the weather was near perfect, the qualifying times got better and you got the feeling that things were getting serious. Our host Mark posted some impressive times and smiles was the order of the day. Enjoyed the atmosphere in the garage and pit lane, you got the feeling of being part of it. Don't think I would have enjoyed the event as much sitting in the grand stands. Walked around and perused the visitors bike park, some serious eye candy on display. Saw some bikes I hadn't seen in years, spoke to several of the riders and all were happy to chat, all proud of there bikes.
The day ended with all the Canberra contingent having posted improved times and the feeling in the garage was one of contentment, Final day to come.
We all had a great meal that night and looked forward to Sunday races.

Sunday morning we booked out of our motel and headed back to the track early. Many more visitors on the final day. Coffee in one hand and a bacon and egg burger in the other headed towards the Show and shine event, some serious beautiful bikes on display. A chap pulled up on a Kawasaki 500 triple 2 stroke Mach 1, he had driven his bike down from Tamworth to attend the meet, nice guy.
An early accident delayed the start of events but the organisers got things rolling along and made up some time. Speaking of organisers, what a wonderful job the post classic racing association of nsw did in putting on such a professional event. I have nothing but praise for all those involved, a job very well done.

Before we knew it , time to bid farewell to all our friends, sadly we could not be there for the final races but in my opinion they are all winners. Can't thank our host Mark and Dave enough for there hospitality but also allowing us to enter there sanctum for a brief period, I am very greatfull. To terry with the cleanest machines, your love of the sport shows and I wish good luck for the future. Dave, your dices with the Norton are legendary, the Suzuki did you proud, well done mate. Not to forget AJ whose love for the sport and enthusiasm, helping hand was extraordinary, to you my friend good luck with your up coming license.

Would I do it again, in a flash!! The atmosphere at the track was sensational, the people were great and the racing no 1. Superlatives escape me at the moment, bloody great weekend. If you haven't been to one of these events, perhaps it's time you did so, you won't be disappointed and you will be supporting a great sport.
