Ok guys, my latest calculations put me burning at a rate of 12.6km out of every litre I put in (79L/100km). This is a LITTLE much for me, given it's a 250. It's also well below the 'wiki' stated rate of 19km/L (5.2l/100m).

Now, there IS a ding in the stayintune exhaust which could well be contributing, and the carbies do need balancing, and it has done 41,000 now.

By jan I will be replacing the dented muffler with a Roo Racing one, and jan 4th she goes in for a re balancing (as well as some other bits and pieces done).

Would it also benefit from a tune-up? What can people guestimate my fuel consumption to be at after all that? Any ideas?

Hey Artemis, ah, Across carb issues, fancy that :)  interesting consumption figures of7.9l, you would only get 140-150kms per tank ??

I had similar poor mileage on mine and ended up replacing the main jets and pilot jets and balancing the carbies which made the bike run heaps better and mileage improved heaps. If your bike has an aftermarket exhuast, then the previous owner may have fitted larger jets in the carby which which would add to your fuel consumption woes. Do you know if your bike is running rich ?

Im looking forward to watching a vid of your bike with the Roo Racing pipe

    Cheers

Tehe trust me mate, I await the postman's knock with baited breath...

I'm not sure if the jets have been swapped out or not, though it is a possibility. The consumption is just... too high. I figure what i do is get the rear end sorted (wavy rotor and worn tire, so all that's getting replaced while I have the cash), the pipe swap, then see what I've got left over + chrissy money to get it tuned and the jets looked at/swapped out... But as it stands, I want my rear brake back!

Just a site that saves you doing the math on your fuel economy.  Enter trip data, litres and price each fill by mobile or PC and it shows how you're travelling economy-wise.  PC version of the old spiral note book in the glovebox.

Fuely is awesome, i use it religiously. Praying they bring out an ipad app though!

As for your economy that is pretty bad. Balance and clean the carbs and replace the throttle slide holders FOR SURE! Change the air filter and plugs too while your at it to give yourself something to work from. A ding in the slip on is not going to be the source of the problem ill tell you that much!

This is what i get. http://www.fuelly.com/driver/GlenR

I once got 5.3L/100km which I've never once achieved again. Funnily enough that was with shell 98 fuel and on my way back home from wollongong, so i went through the RNP and through stop and start peakhour on that trip. No idea how i got that economy lol! Mostly its 7l/100km on my 100% stock bike. I wish i could get it down but i honestly suspect 7L is as good as it gets on mine at the moment considering i live about 2 minutes from the M7 and I've ridden 100% freeways at 100kmh and only gotten that! Can't be cause im a fat bastard lol im only 60kg  :p

Plenty of others get lower though so I'll be embarking on a mission to find out why mines so bad. Not too sure what it would be at the moment though. Here are my thoughts. Let me know what you reckon -

    1) Slide holders again. Only put 4000km on them but perhaps its happening again. Bike runs well generally.
    2) Idle mixture is off. Again i doubt. if i go any leaner the revs hang.
    3) needles and seats are worn. Have adjusted to the needles one notch leaner and it does run better, but perhaps this is an indication that they are badly worn.
    4) Fuel pump? It has a bigger one but i don't believe it flows much more or at any more pressure.
    5) Low compression. Waiting on my adaptor to check but im very sure one cyl is down. I'm not sure if this would cause fuel consumption problems though? (if anything wouldn't it cause lower consumption)
    6) Balance. I use a home made jig and the idle is super stable. But perhaps it needs to be done to an even finer level.

Anyway, its an intruiging subject and if you read every forum its an ongoing problem. Plus with that 12L tank you need every last km so finding the major causes of high consumption will be handy indeed  8)

they are in the slide holder, you have to undo the plastic clip on top of the slide, be careful, there is a spring in there

    Cheers

leaner is down, richer is up...? And I assume the 'normal' setting for the four fuel/air mix screws is 2 turns out?

fuelly rocks, ive been tracking my YZF-R15 V2 on there and im down to 2.8L/100km so far....

my 88' ZXR will go on there too and im going to track her fuel progress. sorta happy i got a 150cc single to commute on (useless on weekend rides though)

anyways, ALWAYS use 98 premium... if a servo does not have it... go to the next one. will clean the bikes fuel system over time, give better mileage, wont gum up in the carbs over time, and most of all... old school carby bikes gain the biggest performance increase from 98 premium (unlike Fi bikes that are tuned for 91)
