5k service

    ok the bike has done 5000km since its last major service, where the carbs were done and balanced, air/oil filters replaced, chain and sprokets and most things were checked.

    what should i be doing round about now, i was thinking of changing the oil, refilling fluids and leaving it at that.


    on a side not what is average life for chains?

    Do another service <!-- s:) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!-- s:) --> should cost around $150 ish.

    The small things like oil, break fluid etc do yourself and the rest get a mechanic to make sure everything is still in good condition like breaks, gears etc.

    You can even change the clutch etc yourself, not that hard <!-- s:) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!-- s:) --> Just use the right tools.

    hey guys, just wondering if you have to fill the radiator fluid up throught the overflow at the rear, cos i can not for the life of me find the radiator intake on my 3ln-1?? i already feel like such an idiot, but if u feel the need to rub in in hahahahahaha

    No, the radiator cap is under the fuel tank near the radiator.

    Putting more fluid in the voerflow reservoir will have little effect.

    does the fuel tank tilt up towards the handlebars or down towards the rear of the bike, i was trying to undoe the allen key bolt near the rear of the tank and it did not want to budge.

    It can do both (although movement is limited, it'll be enough for you to get the cap off and get a funnel down there). You'll want to remove the bolt at the front so you can lift it up there.

    If you're having trouble with the bolts, try shifting some of the weight off them by moving the fuel tank around (if you can). Otherwise try an impact driver. If brute force doesn't work you're not using enough of it :p

    The idea of the overflow bottle is to catch the water when the water expands and radiator over pressurises and vents liquid.

    The reverse happens when the system cools down. The cooling system actually creates a vacuum as the water cools and shrinks, sucking water back in to the radiator (this is providing there are no leaks in the cooling system and the cap is in good condition).

    The end result is that the overflow bottle level will rise and drop when the bike is used and stopped, maintaining an average level.

    If the cooling system is low in water it will suck water back from the overflow tank because the cooling system will only expell steam when hot. Thus the tank level will drop, eventually filling the radiator.

    The overflow tank is a good indication of the state of health of the cooling system.

    Aye, as the water in the system heats it expands... but it will only overflow to the container if there is enough liquid in the radiator to start with. If there is too little liquid in the system then it won't expand enough to raise the coolant level so that it reaches the overflow tube.

    Conversely, if the level of the coolant doesn't reach the overflow tube when the coolant is hot, then it won't create sufficient vacuum when it cools down to suck coolant back into the system from the overflow container.

    Hence why you need to fill the system up through the radiator cap (especially after you drain the coolant). If the radiator is full, and (as Dave says) there is a good seal, then you should never need to touch the radiator cap unless you run out of fluid in the overflow reservoir, or do a coolant change.

    I think you might wont to do an oil change about 3000k not 5000k. I do mine at 2000k and oil filter at 4000k but thats just me

    ok i have run into problems. topped up the radiator fluid, but when put it all together the bike is making a very wierd noise, a very low vibrating moan when i rev is the best way to put it, kinda like an addition to the high pitched mosquito noise it already makes. In addition to this the acceleration is very wierd and delayed. As i was riding home tonight the bike was spluttering a bit then died, checked fuel level in it and it was fine, switched to reserve anyway and started fine. any hints? or am i in for an expensive week end?

    just took the fairings off and lifted up the fuel tank to check fluid.
    another stupid question, a fuel pump is situated at the bottom of the fuel tank?

    it should be but u could ur bike could be like mine and not have one at all. You should hear it when the ignition is on if you have got one. As a general question, does a fuel pump help your consumption at all or just let u take more advantage of your reserve tank?

    It will probably increase fuel consumption if you don’t adjust the float heights after hooking it up. It wouldn’t be much, the main aim is to be able to use the full tank.

    You should be able to see the fuel pump and filter with the left side fairing off. Just look where you fuel line goes after it leaves the fuel tap. If it goes straight to the carbs then it has no pump.

    Do you reckon that running without a fuel pump could lead to the bike misfiring under load (running too lean?) like when going up long steep hills?

    I find that mine without a pump has troubles getting up a hill. Engine runs prettty crappy if for an extended time and sometimes bogs down and cuts out. How much will a pump set me back now im thinking about it?
