Was riding through the national park and stopped for a break. Had to clutch start it after that as it wouldn't crank (press starter, hear a click, no crank). It was completely fine after I got a downhill start, until I stopped again on the way home. Same deal, dash lights, indicators and horn are all OK but she won't crank when you press the starter. Hear a click each time you press it. I think it might be the side stand sensor. Any opinions?
have you tried to put it in gear and give it a push, while the motor isn't running, and then press the start-button again? sometimes your startermotor has a weak spot, grtz Jo
I can clutch start it just fine on a slight slope, but it won't crank at all. Even when the bike's running, if I press the starter, just a click & no crank EDIT: I sat there pressing the starter for a minute or two, it weakly cranked once or twice but not enough to start the engine
Don't hit the starter while the bikes running And yes I concur ....battery has expired ..... get the multimeter on it
Do the battery/charging system check ..... and check the connections are clean and tight as suggested to the battery ,solenoid and starter motor etc http://2fiftycc.com/index.php?threads/how-do-i-test-my-12-volt-battery-and-charging-system.1794/
if it klicks is the solenoid. comes from stuffed battery or poor connections, mainly earth.use de multi meter and should read 12.75 volts or better. if a series of clicks is termed shotgunning and is battery.could also be starter motor internals, mainly bearings or brushes.
As most have said check battery volts standing and then running then move onto solenoid and finally the starter itself checking connections as you go generally cold start issues battery ,hot start issues starter solenoids or overheating electrics
Right so I've replaced the battery with a new gel battery (pre charged) and the problem remains. The old batt is a Yuasa and measures 12.6v, new one 12.7v The sun is out now so I guess I'll be locating the solenoid and the starter motor itself... EDIT: I have also checked the fuses and swapped the one in ignition with a spare and no change. Checked the connections on the 30A green fuse which are fine. Think I will need some help locating the solenoid and motor itself
Electrical System Chapter 16 http://2fiftycc.com/index.php?resources/kawasaki-ninja-250r-service-manual-part-2.101/
12.6 volts does not mean stuffed battery. next is the solenoid. bridge both termininals and see if life in starter.if not first step is to check solenoids and starter terminals for coorosion. if notthen then the starter. check for burnt smell. also check the brushes. feel the commutator to see if it turns freely.if binding probably the bush on the drive end worn. my gut feeling is solenoid.
It's fixed Bad connection from solenoid to starter motor (on the starter motor end) Anyone in sydney need a battery?
Well... I spoke to soon, the problem is back. Stopped the engine in traffic across the harbour bridge today... oops, won't crank again. It was fun trying to start the bike again! I can't easily get the actual connection off the starter motor... someone's put two nuts and a washer in and tightened it to buggery. The rubber cover has also perished so it's a bit rusty. Going to take fairings off and attack it tomorrow... will pull off the lead, chop the end off, clean it up and solder it together
