Help 2010 Kawasaki Ninja 250

    Hey guys! very new to this forums, but i've been told you guys/girls r very helpful, anyway, bought my first bike (ninja 250) 3 months having the bike, found out it needs the timing chain (cam chain tensioner) redone, tightened? etc etc... I opened up the bike from the clutch side and the chain was pretty loose, there was no way i could tighten the chain (that i could find) from that side, is there any other way i can... tighten the chain or what ever without pulling the whole engine out or what ever? any help would be much appreciated, cheers in advance.

    How many K's on the bike?

    I never messed with tensioner on my 250R when I had it. Does it have a ratchet mechanism or is it just spring loaded?

    Ratchet operated tensioners should have a spring or two in them to operate the ratchet. If it's just spring loaded with no ratchet then you may be able to get away with new springs only.

    Now lets just rewind a little here ...how did u 'find out' there was a problem with the cam chain/tensioner?

    As mentioned above its only a relatively new bike

    You cant just remove cam chain tensioners any old way ..... different bikes have different methods

    Here is yours ..... notice the word 'caution' ! :D

    I suggest you get the manual as you have the clutch apart also .... spring bolts need to be torqued during re assembly etc

    Thanks for the link @Damus. ill buy it and see how it goes, i couldnt find a new cam chain tensioner for the 2010 haha. It has 32,500 kms.. it makes a loud tinging sound is all, i took it to the bike store near me ( i trust them implicitly) and they said the chain needs re-doing (costing about $1,000) i like to do things myself, so i took it away and now im looking at it cause i have time. Cheers but i cant find any spring inside it, i took it apart and all and couldnt find anything broken, ill just buy a new cam chain tensioner and see what happens.

    If you go with the manual tensioner, which i HIGHLY recommend. Pretty much all you have to do is hand tighten it until its like finger tight ect, from there tighten slightly until the noise goes away. Straight forward *nods*.

    I bought it :p ill try almost anything to fix the $1,000 issue vs $100 haha. nah it seems like a good, logical idea so ill do that. i just got told that it'll need a top end rebuild cause its at 30,xxx + but the engines fine, no problems besides this. so.. fingers crossed it works. thanks man.

    Sure if you go to Team Moto at Maroochydore.....Kawasaki dealership they would have or get a new tensioner for your bike.
    As for 1K to fix it ?????????? seems rather on the rich side.
    It seems absurd with such low mileage on your bike that a new chain should be required.
    By the way....whereabouts are you on the Sunny Coast?

    Im located Noosa/Tewantin area. and the 1k was with new chain, sprockets and like 2 hrs (rough) work. I've heard badddd things about Team moto in maroochy... or in general actually, so i just dont go there. i go to Scooter Style and the guys there r very genuine and interested and ****. I've been to Team Moto at maroochy and they.. wearn't very helpful just wasted my time ( i was after a rear tail light and some indicators) so i've never gone back.. and i didnt really want a new one i wanted an after market one that could go further in to make the chain tighter (which damus linked me to) so yeah. & maroochy is like 30 mins from where i live, and i got no license (for 6 months, only 12 days or so into it) so will make it harder then it should/could be haha.

    That's a rip off alright. The mechanic I used in Sydney to fit new chain and sprockets, and do a blueslip cost me $170 ($70 of that is the blueslip). I bought the parts and got him to install them. Removed all the fairings prior. It's not hard to do a chain and sprockets. He is a car mechanic but rides bikes
