Hi all! I have a 2008 Honda CBF250 and I’m having issues selecting neutral and quite often I need to switch bike off in order to select neutral. I’ve searched online about this issue and various people comment that if one uses the wrong oil, that this problem happens. I’m about to change the oil and I wanted to know what is the best recommended oil for this model. I found a website that states to use “10W40” but it does not specify “Synthetic” or “Semi-Synthetic”, etc. Incidentally, the clutch cable appears to have the right tension and I don’t have issues going through the gears, (except second gear, once or twice a week it snaps out of gear into neutral, particularly if I shift too soft without the right foot pressure, you know, lazy shifting…) Can anyone advice on the oil I should use? Thank You in Advance! Willy
The thing that matters for bikes is that the oil is suitable for wet clutches. I would suggest that your problem is a worn out clutch basket with notches worn into the fingers. This makes it impossible to select neutral with the engine running and gear changes in general very notchy.
Thanks for the info Linkin Selecting gears is zero problems, except that around once a week it snaps out of second gear, particularly if not enough foot pressure selecting second. Interesting point that I did not mention on my original post is that one of my friends has the exact same bike as mine, but his bike only has 19,000 kms and mine has 50k, and he is having the same issue, finds it hard to select neutral. He only recently bought the bike and has not changed the oil yet, as he was getting other things fixed but will be changing next week as right now waiting for oil filter to arrive. Thanks for feedback.
2nd gear jumping to neutral is a sign of a worn out 2nd gear set and/or damaged/worn selecter forks. The shift drum might need attention, too. However before doing all that, first port of call would be new shift/detent springs. They are usually located behind the clutch basket on jap bikes, but I don't know the CBF250 that well. Gives you a chance to inspect the clutch as well.
Correct oil is 10w-30 , do you have any freeplay in your clutch lever ? You should have 2-3mm of freeplay
