Pinned So what have you done to your bike today?

I think I can get it out by doing what Murdo suggested and maybe even jam/push a new one in. I've ordered a slightly smaller seal (8x25x7), so hopefully that will go in a bit easier. Film negative...never thought of that...thanks.

 

I think you should be 100% certain that that is where the leak is coming from first.

 

Trust me, I do not want to pull this engine apart. I can see the oil weeping from around the centre of the seal. The seal in the pictures is not the one on the bike (too dark to take a good pic). I originally thought it was coming from the gear shaft cover, but that was okay when I pulled it off and I replaced the gasket just to be 100% sure. There isn't too many other places it can be leaking from anyway. I don't know how long seals are meant to last, but it is a 35 year old engine and it doesn't look like it has ever been apart before. Murdo's comment about cleaning around the rod hole is my last gasp before trying to pull it from the outside. I put a magnet into the hole to see if anything was floating around, but nothing. My guess is the spring has either cried enough or is no longer holding the centre tightly enough.

 

Okay, so apart from the section that comprises part of the case that separates the countershaft sprocket from the rest of it, what is the need for the seal to retained by the crankcase? I think trying to fit the seal in with so much of the housing blocked is going to be difficult and I can't see why you can't just grind enough of it away to be able to fit a new seal.

Edit: If you are concerned about the seal coming out then make a retainer that picks up off that banjo bolt.

 

That's a very good idea. I may just do that. I should be able to get a grinder in there and if I damage the oil seal it won't matter as it has to be replaced. Thanks Blair.

 

One of these rotary burrs. Buy a good one made for aluminium. I think the retainer would not be difficult to make if you have access to a welder.

 

Yeah that'll do it, the alloy one's have wider flute's.

You can get them for a Dremel too in a 1/8" shaft cheap, $7 inc delivery, i've bought a few set's

Just let the burr gently cut by itself, no pressure, if they grab they sometime's make the die grinder spin around and can do all sort's of damage

 

Managed to get a bit of painting done today. I wasn’t happy with the color on the front forks so having used the Dupli color Hyper Silver before so scuffed them up a little and gave them 2 light coats and I am much happier with this color.






I will clear coat them next weekend.
I also bought some White Night metallic color in Brass to try and replicate the ratty Cad plated FZR rear shock. It came out ok. I need to see how it will look when the adjusting collar is painted and the spring is back on. Might paint the spring Red.

I finally got around to painting the frame today after filling a few minor grinder marks and cleaning up some of the less attractive welds.
I used the White Night Hi temp metallic Charcoal. I managed to get 1 really good coat onto it with plenty going into all the little areas underneath that are water traps. I will give it another coat during the week and then hit it with Satin Clear next weekend.
Finally feel like I am making some headway on this one.. I need to get the tyres off the wheels and start on them soon too.

 

Always the best part when the frame is dry and you can begin bolting bits to it.

 

Wow.. that does sound good.. @GreyImport this should be the exhaust for the Hammertone Flyer It will look good and sound great.. then you just need to make sure it goes hard

 

I went out for a ride today, we've had a bit of crap weather lately.
First hour was fine then it came in overcast, and windy then it started raining pretty heavy.
I managed to keep the FZR upright across the top of the hill in the wind, but had a couple of scary moment's as strong gust's of wind moved me halfway across my lane @ 80k/h.
Stopped in at the beach for a quick look and took these pic's
I picked up my son from school 1.5 hour's later and you'd never even know it had been windy and pouring.

Picked up a bargain priced muffler off gumtree today, $80,
I guess if it's ok to have an Italian Scalvini muffler on my pitbike, it's ok to have an Italian GPR Powercone muffler on my FZR

It's got 2x different DB Killer's inside so it should be ok, it's E marked for road use too
