Hi all So as a recovery tool for dual hip surgery, I bought a 1990 model with 34,400km. I’ve pulled everything I want to pull off it so far. The last piece I’ve removed was the rear shock. Are these rebuildable, or do I buy a new one? I’ve searched the threads and read the workshop manual (what’s with drilling a hole it?). It looks like the YSS will set me back about $500 delivered... My initial intention was that I would take it off and send it away to be rebuilt to take my 95”ish”kg. If this is possible who does this work? Any recommendations and opinions are appreciated. My reasoning for buying the bike and the intended use are not as a daily rider, but more as a museum piece that I can ride once a month, and have on display as an excellent example of these legendary little bikes in between. My daily (post recovery) is a very comfortable BMW R1200RT, it will be nice to get back to a “real” bike every now and then. I’ll await some advice from those in the know. Cheers guys
The go to guys in Brisbane for a mc22 shock rebuilds is rad suspension at rocklea A full rebuild will run your $350 or so as long as the shaft is not rusty. Another option is get into contacts with keo Watson on Facebook. He does rebuilds for $150 but you have to post it to him Keo’s Dad Ken was quite the racer in his day and is building the p6 racing class in nsw , nearly everyone is on a mc22
I can vouch for RAD motorcycle shock repair's.My rear shock was rebuilt and set up for my fat little body , i was way to heavy for the stock set up even on the hardest setting. Great guy to talk to and doesn't treat you like an idiot ,this is the first time iv'e had a shock rebuilt.Good price (my shock shaft was in good nick so no re-chroming needed) and pretty fast turnaround also.
Although you are in QLD, you can post the shock to Keo, and he will post it back to you after rebuilding it. Ask him first for details, he builds the shocks for racing, and I'm not sure if that's what you need after your hip surgery.

If you have the money, another alternative is a custom ohlins. This was done by Motthomas on the CBR250 forum. You can read about it here on his blog. I was going to get one of these and mod it for the MC22. I ordered one from WeMoto here but it seems Ohlins in Thailand stopped making them. There was a European version also. I might settle for a YSS. Update: I bought an Ohlins from Tyga.

Curiosity got the better of me - the result of my quest - rebuilding an OEM might be very different if it's designed to be not disassembled
