So picked this boy up for $100 and never owning a bike before thought it would be best to resurrect one for my first. It's a 1990 fzr250 and it needs a bit of work. The previous owner (my cousin) just had about $1500 of head work done and just never put it back together, so it's been in a shed for the last 10 years or so. Most of it is still there but it all needs a good clean and probably a rebuild. Anyway I'm babbling, here's what it looked like the day I picked it up.
Biggest issues are carbs, cam chain and valve clearances in these, aside from just being old grey imports. Carbs you can sort with litetek kits from litetek.co and keyster kits from motorcyclespareswarwhouse.com giving you high quality seals and new brass bits. You will need a set of JIS screwdrivers or bits so you don't mangle all the fasteners. Can chain and clearances can be necessary on these bikes, but hopefully not if it's had head work.
Its a 1989 3LN1 ... but its obviously been in pieces with that glorious paint job so check here as the engine may be different or the carbs from a later model https://www.2fiftycc.com/index.php?...zr250-bodywork-frame-engine-carburetors.3469/ https://litetek.co/Carb_Kit_Yamaha_FZR250_3LN1.html https://www.litetek.co/Guide_MikuniBDST_Rebuild.html Loads of info on these bikes here on the forum Have fun
Cheers for the welcomes guys, went to turn her over for the first time and the main relay was buzzing at me so pulled it apart and found a couple of pins had come loose from the solder so gonna re-solder all the pins and try again. Fingers crossed it fixes it.
Looking over the electrical (uncle made a mess of it, mor work for me) checking fuses ect. But can't find the fuse box?? Wiring diagram says there is one. Is it lying or am I blind cause I only found 2 inline fuses (one had been shorted by tin foil).
Had a dream, I was falling but the ground never came. No ground! Checked the bike and sure enough one of the ground wire to the frame wasn't attached. She turned over with the button first time. Bit early to try for a fire (5am) but things look promising.
No fuse box ... just those 2 inline ... main one is 20A from memory , cant remember the other one ... 5A?
Someone put a lot of work into painting the frame, forks and swingarm, and it looks to have been done well. And the preparation of the fairings, despite the small broken pieces on the upper looks thorough. Good luck getting it running, seems you're on the right track and as @Linkin has stated, there are a few essentials, but we're all over that on these forums now, so you won't have any questions left unanswered Once running, then attend to the cosmetics
The frame paintwork had been chipped alot due to being moved from shed to shed so once it's running I'm gonna strip it all down and redo the paint work. Thinking about taking the frame and swing arm in to be powder coated. I'll do the Forks and the rest of the body myself.
Air blowing out of carb an not getting fuel. Gonna have to pick up a feeler gauge and check valve clearences. And that's my weekend. Just gotta keep moving from one problem to the next.
There will be some blowback from the reflection of the intake pulse when the valve closes, however it is a very good idea to check valve clearances I wrote this how to many years ago https://www.2fiftycc.com/index.php?threads/fzr250-zeal-fzx250-valve-clearances-howto.1697/
Clearences checked and looks good to me. All intakes at 0.10mm and all exhaust at 0.15mm. Timing looks good too. Fixed the fuel pump so it's got fuel, it's got spark and timing and clearances are good. Still not firing tho. It is pumping quite a bit of fuel into the carbs tho.
Cheers bro, will work towards those when I take the engine out. It tries to fire on 1 and 2 but 3 and 4 are flooding too much. So gotta get a rebuild kit for the carbs.
Check which carbs u have before u order a kit https://www.2fiftycc.com/index.php?...zr250-bodywork-frame-engine-carburetors.3469/
So took the bowls off the carbs, 1and 2 look clean (no problems with them), 4 has a dead fly and a small amount of dirt in the bowl (slight flooding). 3 however (bad flooding) has a lot of dirt, a dead earwig and a couple of roach eggs. Lovely
