I was thinking about a timer system for my project speed fzr (the only thing I've done to this bike so far is try to fit a knobby for a dirt drag I never did and order a tappet gasket). I was going to use mirrors and maybe a laser (restricted item nowadays, I believe) but a high-speed camera rifle scope and mirrors might be the cheapest option. You could try jaycar or ebay for sensors and laboratory suppliers for lasers?

On the topic of drag times, I might try to get the fzr to the calliope drags on Aug 5, but that day is quite booked already. Maybe I could offer it to someone else to ride...
And for a quick 250 4-stroke bike, I'd get a single cylinder motor, in a minimalist frame and a jockey. Other tricks to beware of include not using all your revs (maximum torque is about 10,000rpm and max power about 14-15,000, after max power you might be getting less acceleration then if you change gears, there's maths on that), or changing spark timing as revs increase, more preload on suspension and hardening the dampening settings to reduce wheelies, cam timing and/or profile can be varied for higher revs, provided the valves close quick enough. Well there's a lot of things one COULD do, but cost and time and such are common limitations.

While there was a good laugh about non existent communication devices earlier... there are some relatively cheap options for smart phones with all the options which together with this App be the perfect self timing setup...
Most likely less than $400 and you get a very good phone to boot... I dont think you would find too much cheaper than that to do the same job... apart from the 6 pack of beer....
Look for the ASUS Zenphone 3 5.2" phone... around $340 at Kogan... my Son uses this and it is right up there with my iPhone 7 Plus for photos, speed etc...

I've not put a lot of thought into this yet, but the best I've come up with is using a doorway chimer (like the beam when you walk into a shop) at each end with wires to a cheap digital stopwatch using the doorway beams to send a signal to the stopwatch buttons.
    Any suggestions?

Here's a Jaycar one... There are 3 wires to the laser unit, which sends the beam to the reflector and reads it back... I would say the 3 connections would be: 1) supply voltage, 2) negative and 3) sensor wire... this could be used to trigger something.... an electronic stop watch?

Working off 9 volts, that could be the go.

I'm a big Nostalgia Drag Racing fan and want to build a bike to race in these events one day. The cut off used to be 1985, but lately I've noticed events are being advertised as pre-1980 for bikes, which limits the 2fiftycc options. Swan Hill recently had a Nostalgia Meet, but I did notice some modern bikes racing, so I might have to ask them what there "rules" relate to. Here's a link for any Nostalgia fans...

WSID has a street bike class (@Linkin) that runs as part of its "Atura NSW Championship".Their last meeting before the Winter break was held recently and you can look at a gallery and results/details in this link...

A couple of pics for you... the first is how NOT to launch and the second is of someone out to have a crack and see how they go (16 second dial-in means all of us 2fiftycc drag racers would be giving this person at least a 1 second head start. @Linkin probably 2 seconds).

I'm pretty sure if I sat on that thing it would probably break or bend in the middle at the very least!
