I think WSID has a bike night every month (mid-week). Check it out. They might let you run.

Ha. Yes. All good fun though. Nathan (round 2) and Chris (Round 3) both run 5.4-5.5 times (and you can hear them coming!). I wish I'd had the bike running sooner. I'd love to do the entire season and see how the little 2fifty goes. Something to aim for next year. There's a big bike meet at Portland on the 7th of March. If I can get the bike to a test session this Sunday, I might go and try my luck. I just got back from Sydney yesterday, so will have a look at the bike tonight and tomorrow. I've just walked into work and several of the pieces I ordered while away have arrived, so fingers crossed.

I just checked WSID website and L riders are not permitted to race. http://www.sydneydragway.com.au/events/bike-night120315/

Maybe the next time I'm in Sydney I'll buy a lid and a cheap jacket and take your FZR for a skid for you? (joking of course).

Great idea. I wish I lived in QLD, I'd be there in a heartbeat. I think Simon's CBR250R would run 13's with the right gearing.

Living in Melbourne isn't great for drag racing. Calder Park is a goat track, Heathcote is okay and the other real tracks are 4+ hours away (Mildura, Warrnambool & Portland). Willowbank is a top class facility. Lucky bastards.

Errrrrr, I wouldnt go that far. WSID is top class. Willowbank is underfunded IMHO. For a facility that holds the biggest annual Drag event outside the US, there could be alot done to improve the pits, paddock, and roads in the Willowbank facility. Much the same as QLD raceway.

But I suppose it's the 600m of straight track that really matters.

Races aren't won in the pits, but they make the whole experience so much better if they are to a good standard.

I would buy it and let you have a read, but bit tight with the readys at the moment. $44.00 plus post is the cheapest I have seen it advertised for.

I agree with you about Willowbank as a facility. Given Denis ran it as non-profit and put all the earnings back into the place; it's come a long way from where it started. WSID is newer and better laid out. For mine, the best track/facility in Australia is the Motorplex. if you want to see what a real POS looks like, come to Calder. I haven't been to AIR since it reopened, but the track looks dodgy on TV.

Just came across this post when discussing my bike history with my daughter and her boyfriend. I knew Mick, we both worked at AEC in Southall in the late 60's. I was an apprentice and Mick worked in the Tool room, the thrid member of the dynamic trio was Fed Lewin, first man to do a 100mph lap on the Isle in a sidecar with his girlfriend as passenger.

Mick used to use Fred's worn out sidecar tyres on his blown CB250, and pulled low 10's, the tyre profile was perfect as sidecars wore them flat, in the early 70's low 10's nailed the record in Mick's 250 class. Then 'the slick' arrived and that was when Mick killed the 10 second barrier on his first run and I mean killed it! Don't remember what the time was but it was a massive drop, something like 0.3sec on his first run. I remember the elation in the tool room following the weekend.

Mick wasn't a big guy and he just had a knack on that bike.

Welcome to the forum Hugh and thank you for your post. Many of us on here admire pioneers like Mick Hand and other racers from yesteryear. Thanks for the tip about using sidecar tyres too.

Just to clarify, I thought Mick raced a 2-stroke 250cc? In my opinion, it would be an effing miracle for someone (even Mick) to run low 10's on a blown Honda CB250 (4-stroke). Do you have any pics or specifications from those bikes?

Vid from Santa Pod of bikes in 1981 with Mike Hand at 2.20min. I think the announcer says 9.751 at 137mph (could be wrong but still impressive).

Unfortunately no pics, couldn't afford a camera in those days, all my money went into my NSU 250 and Norton 750. Mick's bike was a 4 stroke running methanol, nitros wasn't around then. What happened after I returned to Aus in '74 I don't know, lost touch with Mick and Fred
