What was the glass coating you will use to finish coat the wheels? Also, how did you hold the rim when polishing it?
I have used both 22ple rim coating and Gyeon Q2 before.. I prefer the Gyeon product and it is more readily available. As for the polishing.. I use an old tyre as the rubber makes sure the rim doesnt move and I can get in there and apply plenty of pressure with the buff on a tapered mandrel for heavy cutting.. when doing the final polishing you dont need as much pressure but I still use the tyre as it protects the rim.
I bought some larger buffing wheels this morning and gave them a bit of a hit on the front wheel.. while it brought it up a bit better than it was it didnt really show up in pictures..
Rebuilding an engine as a spare. This came with some parts I bought ages ago and I do recall the seller telling me it had good compression etc etc. Compression is the least of this engines problems. It needed every gasket replaced, cooling system was clogged with jelly-like substance, oil (sludge) smell would revive the dead, sump was full of something I can't really describe, valve clearances all over the place and, my personal favourite, spark plug broken off in cylinder 4. I needed a few shims to finish the head, so off to Precision Shims for what I needed. This head has 2 different sized retainers, so it's been apart before. Had to pull the head off to extract broken plug and noticed some minor damage on the head surface. Weirdly, pistons look new and bores still have crosshatching. Will finish assembly today/tomorrow and put into frame for run test.
Yesterday I got my kdx200 going and rode a round for a bit (not bad for $100 with an MC19 that is now also running, I'm told). Ok, it isn't a 250, but it turns out it isn't even a 200! It's just a 175. I did have to drain the stinky, rust-coloured liquid from the crankcase. I used the suction of an air degrease spray gun, I tried feed it in from the spark plug hole and through the transfer ports, but in the end the reed valves had to come out, which wasn't a bad thing because they needed cleaning as well. It is a bit of a mess, really. The bearing noise is audible, like a car water pump that leaked passed the seal years ago. Everything about the engine is corroded looking, the carby was dark grey, the clutch cover had been left off for who knows how long, the throttle cable was seized, but I'm pretty sure that even the power valve actually worked (took a couple of goes). It's an enduro version: not compliance plate, no self-mixing.
Finally got the bike running again after it ate a cam lobe and rocker Thanks to @Linkin for help with Buyee and @my67xr for some suggestions on a fix....ended up in queensland at Tighe Cams after repair's So get cams repaired,find ship (very expensive) replacement cam bearing,replace cam chain, pull down oil pump and replace all o-rings I could find..this is proving to be an expensive little bike but its a keeper ...I think
I'll admit to my stupidity. I read the cast part number (1742) on the cylinder intake and assumed it was capacity (as other bikes have listed capacity there). If I just looked at the other side of the cylinder I would have seen the 0.198 with an italic "l" for litre... It's a nice bike, in a sorry state of affairs that include split fuel tank and bent up radiator. Shame I'm going separate it. But I better start with making a zxr run, today.
I had managed to find a really nice SRX400 in Japan and it wasn’t taking any big numbers in the Auction so I made some serious enquiries about importing it. Unless you are doing the importing yourself or filling a container it just isn’t worth it. Including an import license ( up to 1988), container space, Customs clearance, GST etc it was going to be around $2K. Plus the cost of the bike and local Japan costs and it would be an expensive bike. Probably just as well as we had an emergency over the weekend with on of our little fur babies and while they haven’t given us the final bill I am expecting it to be $5K or more . Still he should be coming home tomorrow so I don’t really care, he is worth every cent. will cost that or more to import from the states as well.went to sydney and picked up some stainless steel caterers free standing food preparation benches to put in shed to do work on. costly but cheap in the long run.
Can't you use one of their bike's ? At RiderSafe training in SA most people just use their bike's, but our 2x 1/2 day course's cost's $360
The learners weekend in NSW they supply everything including the bike .... P test u can use your own but also hire their bike if needed ... I had to hire one as the FZR kept stalling doing the stupid cone super slo mo crap
True...but I also want something to ride around on during my L period.. not a lot of point in hiring a bike every time I want to head out and my license wont be any use if I dont have a bike to ride..
I have 4 bikes going at once in the shed: Ninja 650, KDX200 and 2 zxr250. The 650 is just a major service, fork seals and steering bearings. I was testing a zxr engine, tried working carbies on it, no go. Checked the the spark and found only one coil firing, until after stop cranking and it would fire 2-3sec afterwards. 3 igniters, same result. So I looked at the pick up coil and found it had been replaced (different colour wires with joins) - the resistance was on the limit, too. So, do a compression test to see if it is worth continuing. Fitting a tester was problematic. But when I finally sorted it, cylinder 1 got about 90psi, cylinder 2 got about 60psi. No point going any further, parts motor (probably valves leaking, there was water in the intake. The other zxr is the carby donor that needed the carbies sorting because it was running amiss and drinking too much fuel. The kdx was running, but I thought I'd spoil it new rings. Just as well I didn't rid it Sunday, one ring is worn to only 1mm deep; it had a 5mm ring gap!! It could have caught a port and wreck the bore, too. But the bore has pitting and watermarks - a hone might do that. But then the problems grow. Sure, the bearings were shot in the crank, and the kickstarter wasn't always engaging. But when I took the clutch out I found more troubles, like a gearbox locking up after 2 turns and the bits of what looks like clutch plate that come out of the gearbox. Time for a full rebuild. :-(
Nothing today but I did get a call from my Machinist to say my crankcases are finished for the 350 conversion as well as the SRX6 triple tree conversion and the clutch cover having some plugs made up to fill the kick start and decompression lever holes.. I cant pick them up until Tuesday though so I am not sure I will get much more done before getting my knee replaced... still it is progress on the little SRX

Unfortunately the barrel still needs boring and the head is waiting for the hot factory cams and a bit of refurbishment.. apart from that.. the gate is locked as is the garage Plus I know you cant make the long drive to Sydney
According to the EMS Tracking site my bits from Japan have arrived into Sydney. Not that I am expecting to see them this week but it looks like a few things are starting to fall into place Included in this little package are my 30X cams, SRX600 Headlight and headlight bucket plus an SRX600 lock set which is ignition, fuel cap, seat and helmet lock. I think the only one I will need to fix is the fuel cap. Only to take out the lock barrel from the one coming in to the new (almost new anyway) fuel cap I got with the tank. Well... my shipment from Japan arrived a short while ago.. I quickly opened it up and did a quick measurement on the cam lobes and yep... they definitely have a little more lift than the 48Y spec cams I have from the old engine and the TT350 head.. I will unravel it all later and take some pics to go in my build thread... at last some things are going right for us..
