Project Yamaha SRX 250 3WP

That is the beauty of modern paints... it looks like a typical Candy colour... but it is a Single mix.. no base silver metallic coat required...no Candy and no coloured clear... either Acrylic or 2K is a mixed colour and then clear over the top...
It is even available in Spray cans from Supercheap... heaven forbid...
Not overly sure I have the talent to make it an "amazing" paint job but for the outlay... I am going to give it a shot
Yep.. I am going to go the Mustang Ruby Red...

 

Close... needs to be a little darker... but it will most likely Only be the tank that is that colour..
The fame will be charcoal, same colour as the engine... not sure not about the side panels yet but certainly NOT black.
The rear cowl is a different shape as is the seat... and I won't have the front fairing...
Other than that.. spot on...

Well not a lot has been done since last time... other than acquiring 2 more frames.. there are some bits I need of one... the other is going to a good home in Glen Innes....
I sorted all them out then set about wet sanding the tank with 1500 wet and dry just to flatten off the primer...ready for the first coat of colour...




Not overly happy with the result... a little too much Orange Peel for my liking... oh well, nothing some 1500 wet sanding won't fix... then another coat... then...

 

Much happier with the Base coat now...




I love how the colour is so different dependant on light... hoping the weather is OK tomorrow so I can clear it...

 

The weather turned sour up here with the humidity quite high so I chickened out hoping for better conditions this weekend
I spent the afternoon reading up and watching You tube videos on Plastic Welding as I have some of that to do as well.

 

So... I bought myself some Stainless Steel mesh and ABS welding rods and set about repairing the rear cowling side pieces... 1 just needed the crack fixed (it was a long crack) but the other needed the tip re-made so it was a case of plastic weld some stainless mesh in... kind of shape it how I wanted it and then load in some glass fibre re-inforced bog....






And after a little shaping... needs a bit more work but is far better than before I started...


The other side just needed plastic welding but I used some mesh in there too... just to make it stronger.




And had to weld on a new locating knob thing....

 

Plus I managed to sort out the adhesion primer on the front fender... and get some base coat onto it...



Now to let it fully dry before any more steps...

I also painted a spare Valve cover (Etch primed first) and once it had dried for a couple of hours I used it as another test piece for my clear coat...


2 light coats... and the last was a fairly wet coat... It seems to have turned out OK...

 

I have finally managed to sort out the missing pictures and it is time to add a little more on the plans..
I have obtained an R6 rear shock to go into the little SRX to give it some adjustability on the rear....


It is about 2mm longer than the Std FZR shock I was going to use... and the top mount is narrower...


some delicate surgery will be required to give it room to operate properly...




But it should look good and be effective once it is all in...

 

Travel length is a touch longer than the standard SRX but geometry all lines up and the damping is adjustable as well as spring preload so all up it should be better... It is apparently a popular modification in Japan where they race these things... they go nuts on them over there... lol

Its been a while since I did much on the SRX... what with having a stuffed knee, my Son relapsing with his leukaemia and moving house I have been a liitle pre-occupied.
I have been gathering more parts along the way.. as my plans develop and change for the little bike
I managed to get me hands on a repairable belly pan from Japan (pic below) which is the major item.
I also found a pic of a really luscious Ruby Red SRX250 picture while trolling Google Images (below) and would like some opinions...
I cant figure out if the frame has been Chromed or has been painted in chrome paint or powder coated in a chrome finish... I would love to try and replicate the look of this bike but I am not prepared to cough up for Chroming of the frame...
So.. what does the collective brain power of this forum think the finish on the frame and swing arms is ? (swing arm is steel so it isnt polished Aluminium).

 

Umm yep.. I know the Tank colour... it is actually a Ford colour called Ruby Red, it is the frame that I am trying to figure out...
