heres a intresting idea ,the xs400 in 1983 was changed from a sohc (cam) to a dohc with the rest of the engine being fairly well the same as the earlier models ,,,now is it possible to change the earlier sohc engine to a dohc engine and what would you have to change at the very least to have it running properly
I have no idea , but going to a DOHC should be a improvement performance wise. There are a few workshop manual's on Gumtree if you need one , wasn't sure if you have one. There is a dedicated Forum for the XS 400 , they might be able to help. thanks , that c/head put things into perspective and taught me not to drink to much coffee before posting , idle thought , possible but would have to change to much to be viable , easier just to find a late model engine and transfer parts onto it , already on the 400 site but not very active unlike the xs650 site , going down to the coast to pick up the 1981 xs250 motor tomorrow ,says has good compression .. hope so , got a shock when looked up price of new piston kits ... cheapest shipped to oz 400 bucks not including gasket kit etc
Hi Flea Yep , i'd source a complete engine if all possible , it would be safer in the long run i'd imagine , and then you'd have spares. Do you mean a gasket kit an the piston for the XS 250 ? , if so , the gasket kit is available out of Japan pretty cheap. already got the gasket kit , same as 250 as a resleeved 250 (may have to play with the bareel gaskets a little bit) , but went through the whole yamaha piston section and none for the 400 but can get a set of the std rings which is a big help so long as the pistons are good ... there is a 400 g/kit though
