Right My poor wee girl has weak spark.... went for a trip 3 weeks ago (750kms round trip) bike ran like a dream, got home, parked in shed, pulled her out yesterday for a burn (knowing full well it would take a while to kick over) but no go... almost tried to a few times, a couple of heart stopping backfires but no start... so i went through the sad process of troubleshooting... plenty of fuel (new petcock), carbs are good (pocket mechanics need not apply, i know what im up to) new plugs before mentioned trip so less than 800kms on them, loom to reg/rec was melted (not horribly but could see they were hot) fixed wiring and tested reg/rec to find that was still good, anyway last but not least pulled plugs open test in coils.... weak asf spark..... ****... ive bench tested coils, primary comes in @ 3.1ohms on both but nothing through leads, removed leads and still nothing.... long story short caps or coils? Tyia lads/lasses

When you tested the secondary side of the ignition coil's did you have your multimeter set to 20K (20,000) Ohm's ?

And when testing the ignition coil lead's you first unscrewed the spark plug cap's ?

Yup meter set to 200 for primary and 20k for secondary, read 3.0 ohms for primary on both coils and nothing on both for secondary, also checked continuity in leads... positive, checked continuity in caps... nothing, i split everything (coils, leads, caps) and cleared corrosion (a suprising amount i might add) "bench tested" on loom and got one coil to spark well and the other still weak, after some more cleaning connections, a poke here, a snip there a lot of swears i had both coils with good spark from all 4 plugs.... fitted back in bike and..... back to square one f#%€!!!

battery voltage when winding over the starter with the plugs back in the bike? Battery electrolyte up to level?

That melted reg/rec part of the loom is a wee bit concerning, do you think perhaps the reg/rec was replaced after failing and the loom left as it was?

Do you have a jump starter or another battery you can boost with?
