hey guys, i am having problems with my front brake rotor, i had the original rotor that was on the bike replaced several months ago and didnt think much of if because the bike had about 80 000 km on it and i figured that sort of life for a rotor was ok so i just went ahead and got it replaced with a 2nd hand rotor that was in excellent condition. Now i am at just over 90 000 km and the rotor has really warped again, now i am begining to think that there is something wrong with the way i am braking or maybe i am braking to hard. The pads still have about 50% of there life left so they are ok, what do you guys think? and how good is it to get the discs machined?
    Cheers

Assuming that you are experiencing the pulsing brakes at low speed; i wouldn't be too quick to blame it on a warped disc.

Here's a few little tests to see if i can point the blame else where...
    1. If you take the caliper off and remove the brake pads, can you push the brake pistons back in by hand?
    2. Try firmly grabbing the disc(s) and moving them with both hands. Any movement/play? (Side to side and/or rotational)

Also, whilst i'm typing... is it a single disc 2KR or dual disc 3LN?

You can get the disc machined (up to a point) rather than just replace it. Its cheaper. I had this done on my 2kr front disc roughly 4 months ago, and it fixed the problem for a while. I think the shudder is slowly coming back, though.

    Caliper rebuild time. ;)
There's a reason some bikes disc's warp again and again.

hey koma i have a 2kr (single disc) it was checked and wasn't moving when pushed or pulled side to side. why would the callipers need a rebuild? what is it in them that wears down? aside from the pads of course.
spook, how much does it cost to get the disc machined?
    cheers

Discs usually cost ~$60-$100 per rotor to be machined.
It's not so much that the calipers wear out, it's just that they gum up with brake dust and dirt. The reason i ask if you can push the pistons back in by hand is that if their any harder than that, they may be getting stuck and causing that pulsing. That said, getting the rotor machined will stop the pulsing, but only temporarily.

Cost me $90 to get the front disc machined at awesome discs in ringwood. They did a good job, but i reckon thats a little expensive. I've been looking into taking it to car disc machiner - only problem is the 2kr disc is f'ing big and it may be too much for their machines. Can only try, though...
