Nice older article about the McGee Family...

@ruckusman I missed the speedweek episode with your footage. Is any of it online or do you know if they're going to show it again (they normally do a season review etc)?

That episode only covered the Top Alcohol - I did all of the Pro classes including two classes of bikes, so hopefully they will all be broadcast in future episodes, I'll confirm later this week when I chat with the show's producers

The boats were AHEM, mostly uneventful...

2019 Atura NSW Championship Series at Sydney (WSID) Dragway. The Grand Final was held recently and a young lady (Bernadette McShane) won the Street Bike championship. Interesting that they didn't have enough starters to run a category. Seems bike numbers are down all over the place! I'd like to run an extended swingarm on my bike when I get time to get back into it.

This retro bike ran in Modified class. I'd love to run something like this, but with a 2fiftycc engine in Nostalgia class. One day.

In the Pro Class Bikes for the event that I covered recently in Sydney, the Top Bike field was good, the Top Fuel Bike field was greatly diminished and unfortunately I don't get time to pay a lot of attention to the other classes as I'm running around like a chook with it's head cut off dealing with 15 cameras on all manner of vehicles

I've developed a greater appreciation of all of the cutting edge engineering in all of the vehicles - I still regard the lot of them as just sitting a little too close for comfort to a pending explosion

I guess you're referring to the Nitro bikes as they do hurt people when their engines let go. The Nitro HD are the most dangerous as the rear piston and everything above it only have one direction to go, hence why most of the riders wear chest armour. Normally aspirated engines tend to go pop, make crunching noises and stop. I've never seen a normally aspirated motor fail and hurt the rider. Nitro (and even Nitrous) isn't something you experiment with. Twice I've been in the pits next to a nitro-something (a Top Fueller & a Top Fuel Bike) being warmed up and had the engine go bang...it's not a pleasant experience.

Hmm, yes the HD Nitro are especially dangerous 5" bore x 5" stroke, unsure if I can recall if they're strapped over the top of the engines with the webbing that the Top Alcohol, Top Fuel and others with superchargers have.

More than a few cars pop the superchargers during a run, fortunately I've never been in close proximity to anything go bang - they're all loud enough running normally as it is

I recall asking Chris Matherson how many HP he's getting out of his top bike a few months ago - he said 2K HP, or was it 3K HP - it's not really important as that's an enormous amount of power in either case

I was just checking the correct spelling of his name and this comes up as the top result

Ouch... that would have hurt...both the body and the bank balance.

Chris was lucky. His body is the right shape for rolling. When you're doing 240mph+ it's not wise to take your hand(s) off the handlebars. Elmer Trent (USA) did and he didn't survive to tell anyone why.

Jay Upton also stepped off his TF Bike at WSID. There'll be vid online somewhere.

I would hazard a guess that Chris got off the bike because the chute didn't open and/or the brakes failed, the left hand has the ignition stop strap and going into the gravel then the net then over the mound behind at that speed would not be an attractive proposition

I'll ask him on Jan 4th at Willowbank

    Jay Upton's crash

Difficult to imagine how they can get back on the things, but they do
