stalling while down shifting

    hi,to all.i am a new member in this group.i just brought a FZR 250 1989 model.i had a problem with my bike,when i was down shifting,the engine is getting stalled suddenly,and its not starting again immideately.i have to push and hold the start button for some time and again the same problem.some times it starts,some times no,i changed to a new battery and spark plugs,but still the same problem.can any body plz help me.with this.thanks very much

    When you say your down shifting.. i assume that you've pulled the clutch in whilst slowing down for a set of traffic lights or something. If this is the case then it sounds like the bike is running rich, which is causing it to flood and stall.

    When this happens, is there a smell of petrol in the air (especially from the exhaust pipe)?

    Also check the idle speed as it may be to low. It should be around 1300rpm.

    Another thing to look for is the EXUP valve. It may be disabled or not be working properly. There is a "HOW TO" elswhere on this site that will help with EXUP setup.

    yes u r right,when this happens there is a lot of petrol smell.any tips to avoid that,and also how can i adjust the clutch,my clutch fractional point is almost at the end.i want to adjust that to middle.thanks for u r help.

    Ok, to solve the stalling from running rich it's going to need some attention from a mechanic or someone who knows how to tune bikes.

    Running rich problem:-
    The first thing i would check would be the air filter - chances are if you've just bought the bike then the previous owner was a little lazy and didn't feel like buying a new airfilter and just put up with it running rich. If you take the tank off (or remove the front tank bolt and lift it up), unscrew the airbox lid, and remove the air filter - it should have a nice white appearance. If it looks dirty or sooty, then it needs replacing. Believe it or not this may solve the majority of your problems... on the other hand it could be the first of many problems.

    Next up would be to get the carbs cleaned and balanced. Your going to need a mechanic or very knowledgeable backyard mechanic for that one. Doing this ensures that all the cylinders are receiving the same amount of fuel, and the correct amount of fuel.

    Lastly, if it's been running rich for this long it's almost definite that the spark plugs have been fouled. A new set of spark plugs shouldn't cost more than $20 ($5 each tops), so it's a relatively cheap way of eliminating one potential problem.

    Adjusting clutch:-
    To adjust the clutch, your need to unscrew the cable stop which is the larger circular disc where the clutch cable meets the clutch lever. You then need to screw the smaller circular tube type thing that is right next to the larger disc. The smaller tube will adjust the amount of 'play' in the clutch cable and therefore adjust where the friction point is. If it has already been adjusted as far as it will go then you'll need to adjust it from the other end, or replace the cable.

    In all honesty, your probably going to be better off in the long run if you spend the money to take it to a bike mechanic and get it fixed up properly. There's no point riding a bike that's not running well as your likely to be worrying about if/when the bike is going to stall instead of learning to ride properly (or enjoying the ride!).

    i will check thouse what u suggested,i started on the very next day,its running with out any problem,i think its only because its flodded,if still i face any problem,i will check with a mechanic.thanks for u r help,thanks a lot.

    I had the same problem with my bike...infact the very day i picked her up she stalled twice with the 2nd time ending up not being able to start up again...and yes i could also smell petrol. My mechanic found it to be the carbs and after cleaning and having it resealed she's been running sweet ever since <!-- s:D --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_biggrin.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy" /><!-- s:D -->

    As you see, I cannot stress enough about cleaning the carbs when you start to have fueling issues. <!-- s:) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!-- s:) -->
