Help SoulJets Megelli Issues

    Hi all, this is a delayed update on my megelli saga. Being in need of reliable transport I moved on from the megelli due to it's brake failure which occurred in the run in period and engine issues as well as other things like fairings cracking solely from bike vibration and just poor quality of parts all together. I have to say though that if the quality was put into these bikes in production, they would be absolutely excellent - light and nimble while rocking an awesome visual stance and an impressive exhaust tone.

    Either way, I moved on to a ninja 300 and put 5 extra teeth sprocket on the back. The thing keeps up if not beats some 600 cc bikes at take off, let alone corners. (not sport bikes but some sport tourers and etc) I'm rocking sport demons which are proving to be very nice and sticky when warmed up and I almost got rid of chicken strips for the first time in years of riding.

    Regarding the megelli issues discussed above, I never bothered trying to find the exact place where the engine tick was coming from but I did discover that the rockers have a large slop sideways on their shaft. It is highly likely that this is where the noise would be coming from and it can be fixed fairly easily by taking the engine top off and inserting shims on the rocker shafts (wave washers for example or normal washers but both types need to be able to resist wear at high temperature). To check whether you have rocker slop, you can just take the rocker covers off and see if you can move the rocker back and forth along the shaft. I had about 3-4 mm slop which is way too much. If they move a tiny bit, it's probably ok. (Valve clearances were checked and would not be making noise)

    Another engine related issue was misfiring at high rpm. One thing that improved it on my bike was making the flow of gas better from the tank to the carburetor. I've done that by removing a plastic tube from the gas tank tap which acted as the "reserve tank" petrol level limiter. That opened up the round hole intake into the tap as the alternative tap intake seemed obstructed by the tank attachment to the tap. Another thing was removing the fuel filter from the line as it had very small holes at the hose attachments. That improved the misfiring but did not solve it completely. If I applied the accelerator slowly at high rpm, it went to redline fine but if I gave it heaps, it spitted and farted and did not accelerate much. I would assume that would be a carburettor issue and my attempts to find tuning information or whether it is tunable at all - failed.

    Personal advice: I was mad keen on the megelli all the way until I realized what I bought. If you don't mind screwing around with your bike all the time, a megelli is a fun little toy. Otherwise if you want to enjoy riding more and screw around less, go for a jap bike. For me though, I want to enjoy riding and I don't have time for repairing my bike all the time so the ninja was a good solution. A slightly larger investment into any product which has a good reputation and a big name will always be worth every cent when compared to spending 30% less on an unknown product which will not last and is crap quality. As RollsRoyce company used to say : "Quality will be remembered when the price is forgotten" - which is downright true. There is nothing better than a well made reliable piece of machinery which will stand the test of time and will be so reliable that you can be sure to cross any storm on it.

    Yea, and funny thing is I read similar advice on the megelli but stayed true to my perspective to buy it. I lost money on it, but more importantly a lot of nerves and a **** load of time. I don't regret it though because it taught me that very lesson.

    and the funny thing is that if you lived close i would buy it and do a transplant.
