My VT project seems to be missing some bits, most obvious at this stage is the starter solenoid.

I may have something in the shed but will something from another bike work? I'm pretty useless with lecky stuff. On that subject, will connecting a car battery to test (once I sort solenoid) be a big no no or is it safe?

Hi, yes most bike starter solenoids are similar. However be aware of differences in terminal placements:

    1. power terminals may be different: B - battery, M - starter

    2. 4-terminal plug may be different. Coil activation & ground, power outputs

Not that big of deal, you can always swap battery cables and re-pin plug. But easier to map out how yours is configured and get similar solenoid.

Using auto battery to jump is fine.
