I was watching some educational YT vids about the current crop of 'Adventure' bikes and thought some of the forum members might be interested in them too.

    Small capacity bikes for 2022...

This Video is for senior riders and covers mid-sized bikes...

I watched most of the Mid sized video but the computerised voice-over did me in... as well as them stating that the low seat height of the Triumph Tiger 660 Sport would suit many people.... the only way I could get on the one in the Dealership was mounting via the footpeg... no way could I get my leg high enough to go over... once seated I was ok but I wasnt flat footed with it off the side stand... mind you... that is the problem with Ducks Disease :)
It is a pretty competitive market segment...

Thanks for that information Andy. A few of us are inflicted with Duck's disease, so seat height is always a major concern. I once tried to get on the CFmoto tourer (650TK I think) that @Murdo had...I failed. It would have been dangerous for me to ride that bike, so safety first.

I can see myself getting one of these (small or mid-sized) in the near future. Probably buy it and use it in Tassie for touring duties and runs to Launceston or Devonport to get stuff. I'm starting to think the price of fuel is going to remain silly for some time, so riding bikes is going to be more affordable for people than driving the car. I'd get a 600cc+ bike if the wife wanted to be dinked. Otherwise, one of the smaller capacity bikes will do nicely.

Yep, the computerised voice over is a bit much.

I really like the Triumph Tiger 660 but I am not sure I want to spend $15K on a bike that wont get ridden a lot... I am still undecided... I went as rar as pulling up outside the Bike Shop ready to put down a deposit on a Red one that is due in August... but decided to wait... still contemplating lol

I came across these vids on youtube by chance and watched a few of season 6 .... pretty good going I thought
Theres of course a zillion "adventure" vids around but interesting doing it on a Honda CRF300L Rally .... and Ive been to South America which was an added interest for me.

Its a hard choice .... I was keen on the Tiger 850 but wait time is ridiculous
I think something "cheap" and secondhand is the go ..... a test ride so to speak .... if its not suitable , sell it off and try something else

Not for a long time. I did have an SV650 years ago and that was a fantastic bike, so I'm familiar with the basics of the 650XT (I'm assuming it's just a newer generation of the original engine). When I'm ready to take the plunge, I will look for a secondhand one of these. The little V-strom (250cc) is probably just not powerful enough to cruise comfortably and be able to power out of any situations where grunt/torque is needed.

Is the 650XT on your radar?

Probably buy where ever it's cheapest, so the mainland and then re-register down there once rego was due for renewal. TAS Neighbour bought a Ducati V2 last year and he still hasn't got it after November 2021 Delivery date was 'postponed'. Safer to buy on the mainland and ride it over on the boat.

I've seen a few reviews of the CB500X and they're all positive. Might be a good option to buy one new instead a second hand 650XT. Plenty of reviews and road tests online.

The new HondaCBX500 has a better forks than the older ones plus twin front discs.
No switchable riding modes or traction control I think so a bit sparse on features but still good value I guess.
I still like the Tiger 660 though.

Not the cheapest bike in that space. I have to go to Peter Stevens tomorrow to pick up ordered parts, so I'll see if they have one on the floor.

Yes, Red CB500X looks okay. The DL650 the chief posted is ready to go and loaded with all the bits.

True... I find them FUGLY though...Plus it is a 7 to 8 year old bike with 30K on the clock... plus I am not a big fan of the pointy beak.
I figure if I am going to fork out those sort of $$ I may as well seriously consider spending a little more and getting what I really want.. and not compromise.. I seem to be talking myself back into the Triumph again... lol
    The fight is real .:headbang:

The DL650 goes alright, though the DL1000 V-Strom is better. Quite tame for a 1000cc V-twin.

One of the biggest considerations for me is the weight and size .... for just bimbling along on a day or 3 trip via a few dirt tracks and a bit of highway cruising to acheive that , a big top heavy lump is just stupid .... if I was Toby Prices uncle and planning to cross the Simpson then maybe
Its a bit like the mid life crisis grey nomad who buys the boss hog but cant go round corners .... they buy the 1200 BMW or KTM to go buy a Latte via a back road , and fall over at the first sand patch or creek crossing.... youtube is full of them. ;)

I find EVERY "adventure" bike butt ugly ..... and we still havnt found out the purpose of the "beak" :idk:
