Lots of us do work at home on our bikes, and much like we preach the importance of wearing your safety gear when you ride, it is also important to wear your safety gear when you work on them. One my customers works in the industry and was polishing some parts on a buffing machine, the part gripped and flung up and hit him just under the eye, it shattered his reading glasses and cut him under the eye and embedded some small shards in his eye He was very lucky, but if he had been wearing safety glasses, he may well have been okay. He is going to be fine, but ended up with a few days off work and is still very sore and sorry for himself. Nothing worse than getting hurt because you didnt wear your gear. I Just ordered a box of safety glasses for myself and the lads at the shop , to quote my teenage years, if its not on, its not on !!! Kiff
Totally agree. Helping and teaching both my sons with their project bikes. I say the same thing in our garage workshop. Always tell them to wear safety glasses and even just in general working on the bikes - to wear gloves too, as the solvents in petrol/oil/brake fluid/coolants/chain lube/cleaning solvents etc are not going to be kind to your skin and you don't want those solvents to be absorbed over time with the bikes we end up working on, even in general maintenance. Or worse - like in this case, accidently ending up with corrosive solvents or other nasties splashed in your face/eyes etc.
I always wear safety glasses when on things like the grinder .... I had a cutting disc disintergrate the other week I use ear muffs when on chainsaws and the like but my hearing is stuffed anyway from loud rock music in the car for years and concerts back in the day ..... The idea of driving or sitting at a concert with muffs on always seemed a bit silly ... I wear a face mask while spray painting and glasses now also after a wind gust during spraying felt like I had just White Knighted my eyeballs And the old hands are beaten up enough so gloves have a big turnover Ive gone thru 4 pairs in the last 6 months doing crap around here lately .... and the black ones are like $20+ a pair ... but sure beats splinters , nicks and cuts
For general working on the bike I buy these from Woolworths. $10 a box. really strong - they don't tear when you put them on and strong enough that they don't tear when working on the bike.
