I'm looking at buying an unregistered zxr250 in a few days. The only thing I am concerned about with it passing roadworthy is a cracked windscreen. Will this be an issue during inspection? This will be my first bike so I'm not quite sure what they will pick up. It has brand new tyres and plenty of meat left on the pads and the stock exhaust so I'm only really concerned about the screen.

Hi Jake, other guys will advise on your windscreen,In regards to rwc it can be a matter of who you know-some are a bit hard and some will let things go knowing that you will fix it (ie.windscreen).The main items for a rwc on a bike are,
    1-headlight works on low/high beam and flash(pass)
2break light works with foot and hand levers
3-no oil leaks from engine and forks
    4-horn
    5-indicators-working with no cracked lenses
6-front suspension is nice and firm-my block pushes the bike and puts on front break to see how much it dips down
7-the bike starts and compliant with noise level at 4000 rpm
8-tyres-but you said yours are good
9-frame and engine numbers are clear and not molested.

Im sure ive missed a few things but others will hop on and continue-good luck and enjoy...Ken

Cheers mate. The front blinkers are aftermarket LEDs and have a loose connection somewhere but shouldn't be to hard to solder. All the tights work and I couldn't see any oil leaks around the engine and fork seals. The guy I'm buying it from used to work at an inspection station near my house and recomended to go through them. The forks have a preload and compression adjustment so I can make them firmer if needed. I am going to replace all the gaskets when I get time as it will be a daily commuter so if I do come across any oil leaks I'll clean them up as much as possible before the inspection and get them sorted ASAP.

Is the rego just being renewed or has it been cancelled and its a new rego ?

When I get my FZR inspected for renewal he just looks at the lights , blinkers and tyres and the basics ..... takes him like 2 minutes.

For a totally new rego the most important thing is a receipt from the seller and that the engine/frame number match any paperwork you have ..... especially the receipt
Of course the bike has to be presentable as mentioned above
Cracked windscreen could be an issue ....don't know the policy on that these days ...... a lot depends on the individual doing the inspection I would think.

Things may be different in Canberra

I've done a rego check on the rta website and it says the rego expired over 2 years ago but the plates are still assigned to that vehicle. The screen has a fairly decent sized crack. Would I be able to repair it with Perspex glue and paint it black so the damage isn't visible? Is a black screen legal?

The fairings are pretty scratched and faded and the front one has a crack but I will repair and paint it before the inspection.

Not sure on the windscreen but I can confirm all of the above apply in the ACT except the noise level check.

I take my bikes to Kevin's Auto Repairs in Fyshwick and they haven't ever mentioned it.

Glue and painting the screen should not be a problem as you don't look through it anyway.

That is what I was thinking about doing if I can't source something it time. I have however been assured that as it is almost purely cosmetic, it won't affect the roadworthy check. I have emailed the mechanic I'm planning on going to just to make sure.

Well if you take it off no one can complain that it is cracked.

Then it leaves 2 big bits of plastic sticking out that I would probably impale myself on.

Got a replacement screen and front fairing... Just need to paint it black then leave it outside for 6 months so it matches the rest of the bike now

if faded see what your local panel beater uses. most buffing compounds are a fine clay base with ammonia.it is called cutting compound and can be got in various strengths. 2 pak cutting compound is the gentlest.some will show scratches and an after wax will hide them.carnauba wax is the best but bees wax will do. inox with a lanolin base works too.

Half the bike has what looks like matte black spray paint to cover up some damage from being dropped. I'll eventually source new fairings but being a newbie to riding I'm not to concerned about the cosmetics. They are gonna get a lot worse before they get better.

All good mate. I'm not to concerned about how it looks. I'm hoping that if it looks like crap, people won't be tempted to steal it.
