Has anyone used one of these things on a ZXR250?

If yes, was it any good at what it's claimed to do? See following graph.

Also, I don't quite understand how it's meant to work? What does it plug into to affect the bike's power output as shown in the dyno graph?

I believe it plugs in behind the speedo , and it bypasses the speedo 180km limiter

Could be wrong but it showing power output dropping at 180kms when not fitted, from what I understand,’you can get the same outcome wiring in a resistor

From what I gather, they are primarily for the VFR/RVF 400's to increase power. I don't think they do anything on the 250's or other bikes.

Bypassing the speedo restrictor with a resistor or using an aftermarket unrestricted ignition is what I would do.

My lixianda unit is doing OK, as in it hasn't died yet, and my ZXR being a Malaysian one meant it had no speedo restriction in the first place.

Does the Lixianda CDI have a rev limiter?

@kiffsta I might buy one and see what comes with the unit. I was wondering what happens when the ZXR hits 180kph in top gear. I'd hate to get all the way to the Salt and have the bike rev limit at 180kph, but I also don't want to miss a gear and hear pistons kissing valves.

I dont know as I haven't gotten it to or past redline in 6th.

A workaround is to disconnect the speedo drive cable with everything else standard.

I think you would want a rev limiter.... what happens now in lower gears? Is there a limiter in the CDI?

You watch your tachometer like a hawk and shift when you should.

If you rely on a rev limiter to shift gears, you're doing it wrong

The rev limiter is there for missed gear changes... or other things outside the normal run of things... most bikes on the salt or on a drag strip (dedicated bikes for drag racing that is) will have shift lights...as well as a rev limiter to ensure many $$$ of engine are not destroyed by an over rev...
I wouldnt say that F1 drivers, MotoGP, V8 Supercars, GT3 and pretty much any other race series are doing it wrong and they ALL have rev limiters... :)

That's exactly right. When you're riding hard and miss a gear, the rev limiter will stop you killing your engine. The Lixianda CDI worries me if it doesn't have a rev limiter function. I've missed gears on my drag bike and the standard CDI has saved at least 2 engines from certain death. @Linkin have you hit the rev limiter in any of the lower gears with the Lixianda CDI? The standard ZXR250A CDI has a soft rev limiter built in that interrupts the signal to the coils when the engine revs hit 19,000rpm. I believe the 180kph hard limit is a joint effort between the speedo and the CDI...e.g. when the speedo gets to 180kph it cuts the coils/spark via the CDI. I've checked the ZXR wiring diagram and there does not appear to be any sign of this in the diagram and as information about the ZXR CDI's is sketchy/zero, then it's hard to know what's actually happening in there.

The only reason I'm looking into this is since seeing Murdo's drag bike run much better once he went to an unrestricted aftermarket CDI, I'm wondering if I can get similar mid-range power increase by going aftermarket. I'm also looking at a programmable CDI and MSD ignition system and aftermarket coils, so any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.

From what I can tell the Lixianda unit does not have a rev limit in the lower gears... I have checked, briefly for obvious reasons, and it seems content to let the engine go over 19,000. Higher chance of piston to valve contact or chain letting go so I am not keen to test it over and over.

In top gear, I haven't had a long enough straight to see if it will go past 19,000. I recall seeing 17,000 in top gear (210km/h indicated, on a private closed road of course)

Anyway all this talk makes me want to go and change my oil, filter, spark plugs and chuck a new ccs on... can't fathom why though ;)

Had plenty of cops over the weekend as well... drove back from Albury and the traffic was almost as bad as the number of Hiway Patrol... at least they got a few of the idiots.
