looking at buying phosphoric acid at 85% pure to deal with rust ,has anybody used it before painting and also interior of tanks , normal rust convertors have p/acid at about 20% eg sepiton $18 for 1/2 lt the chemical 85% (the rest water ) 1 lt $16.50 /5lt $60.50 / 15lt $166 which can be diluted down to the 20-30% ,every thing iv read should do the trick but am I missing something

have used vinegar in tanks with great success but intrested in the p/acid for general use as well as seems to be a lot quicker ,the vinegar put in tank 3 days ,emptied ,refilled and left another couple of days and then rinced with a mix of petrol and lots of 2 stroke oil ,left couple of days and good as gold few yrs later ,want to use the p/acid on rusty spots on frame etc mainly as well as tanks

Deoxidine is the best stuff for removing rust, cost's about $12 for 1 litre, $40 for 4 litre's.
Most decent Auto paint supplier's sell it.
It's a mixture of Phosphoric acid and solvent's, you mix it 3 part's water to 1 part acid or 2 part's water to 1 part acid for heavier rust.
Brush it on and let it sit for 5 min's or so then scrub it with some coarse steel wool or green scotchbrite.
It need's to be etch primed within 4 hour's.

Rust Off is good for removing rust. https://www.bunnings.com.au/chemtech-1l-rust-off-rust-remover_p1107356
It can be used straight or diluted
Brush it on, leave for 5 min's to loosen then wash it off with water, or scrubbing brush and water
It leave's steel a clean silver/grey colour ready for etch priming

deoxiide ...thanks, will look into it ,the little bit heard about it has to be coated fairly quickly other wise flash rusting happens fairly quickly , but also heard fumes are fairly deadly , do you know what solvents are mixed in

I have used it on car body shell's cleaning up the interior to prep for paint after them coming back from being stripped in a dipping tank for a few day's (Minus Paint,SA)
The fume's if any didn't bother me, i had someone helping me for part of one job and he never mentioned the fume's either.
We did it about 20 feet fdrom the open doorway in the workshop.
After we had finished the Deoxidine clean, the car sat in the workshop for 2 day's before it was etch primed, there wasn't any sign's of surface rust then.
You should use rubber glove's when using it, the one's i used were falling apart easily though due to scrubbing the interior with steel wool as i was doing it so i just used my bare hand's then washed them well when i'd finished.

POR 15 motorcycle tank sealer kit worked well for my Balius tank. Up until then I had been messing with hydrochloride acid and sodium hydroxide.

i thought deoxidine was phosphoric acid?i always cleaned off with gp thinners as steel started to yellow if washed with water.

Yeah it is, Phosphoric with some solvent's, i usually use it straight from the bottle, then clean it up with a clean cotton rag

I used 1 litre of deoxidine and about 10 scotchbrite pad's to do the complete interior, engine bay floor pan and inside of the boot after it came back from being dipped at Minus Paint (That was before the cage went in)
