After finishing up my MC22 project I figured I'd give the two strokers a go. Have been trying to get my hands on one and overheard a guy talking about his dad's NSR250 that's been sat outside for 20 years. Bingo! A couple of days later I've shown up at his place with the trailer. It was sat in this exact spot since 2002 without a cover. The rego is still on hold. None of the wheels spun nor did the engine turn over. Had to drag it on the grass down to the roadside and from there had to pick it up for 2 metres at a time and shimmy our way to the trailer. This is what I saw when I started taking it apart...
The engine only has 19k km on the clock. Fortunately the gearbox was full of oil, so it's still in good condition. The cylinders and pistons look good too.
The crankcase and crankshaft on the other hand... definitely need replacing I think the crankshaft might be salvageable, but it will cost at least $500 to get it refurbished.

That's all there is for now. I have been able to find all the parts I need, but not the money to buy them What I need: Tank Crankcase Crankshaft Brake rebuild kits for master and slave cylinders (or working used ones) Suspension bushes I will try to salvage what I can, but if anyone has any of these parts, or knows anyone that does, please let me know. Wow, I didn't believe the crankcase would get so bad! Try Facebook, there a group called "Australian Smokers" that might help, or look for a Kiwi equivalent. Good luck
What a shame. That is going to be one hell of a project. Getting that one back to its former glory is going to require considerable effort.
Bit of work ahead of you there. Most of the corrosion will clean up with a bead/wet blast and be quite useable. The crank may take a bit of work but anything you have can be rebuilt. Good luck, I look forward to watching your progress.
Thanks, Murdo. The crankcase has severe pitting all over on the outside, up to 3mm deep in some areas. It would need building up with a welder and the crank saddles reground. I can buy a set of cases for $100. Much easier that way.
Sad to see any bike in that state. As other have mentioned , will be interesting to watch the progress.
