Discussion Lost spark for CB250 (1975)

    hyea, I'm fixing up an absolute wreck of a beast.
    Figured i may as well get some new tech in there.

    Seems that cb250s have one ig coil per cyl?
    is there a reason not to just use a lost spark system and one coil for both?

    You would be better off changing from points to electronic ignition.. much less drama and as long as it is set up correctly is basically maintenance free. Is it a G5 or K series?

    Have a look at this ignition... it still uses the points but only as a switching mechanism for the transistorised ignition.. so no electrical load.

    Heya, cheers, i think ill do the transistor thing.
    Still, is there a reason why these things dont use lost spark?
    Is the crank 180 out or something else?

    Says 250G on the forktube, but I dont have much else to go on

    1937 Royal Enfield 250, CF Moto 250 V5, Honda's XL250, CBR250, FT500 plus a few others.
    No, the crank is 180 degree and if you tried to run a twin coil/wasted spark set up you would be igniting the freshly drawn in fuel mix at the bottom of the stroke on your second cylinder, ie bike would not run.

    It will be 180 degree and dual points. There is a service manual etc in the resources section here.

    ONe thing you will need to do is to clean out the centrifugal oil filter.. you need to remove the complete exhaust and clutch cover to do that... it isnt a very user friendly system and one reason why this model got a bad name for reliability.. nobody wanted to pay to have it done or could be bothered to do it... so there were engine failures.. mostly head and cam failures as well as cam chain tensioner issues but all fixable today given a bit of TLC these bikes are wonderful.. which reminds me.. I must get up to Dubbo and pick mine up lol

    if looking for points replacement look at CHARLIES PLACE or COMMON MOTOR COLLECTIVE.neither are cheap but are good.
