Hi all, new here just got an el 250 and was hoping to get some resources but can upgrade my account yet, is that just that I need to be a member for a while? anyway cool forum guys I will enjoy looking around First project is getting the carby working, I have been told it has the wrong idle jet in in so it is hard to start. Will see how I go
Before ripping into the carb, make sure the valve clearances are correct as tight valves will make it hard to start.
Hi all, sorry it has been a while. Finally got to check the valve clearances. Left hand side was a little tight. Intake was 0.05mm the exhaust was about 0.10mm The right hand side seemed ok though, around 0.10mm and 1.5mm But then I messed up tightening the lock nut on the rocker arm, somehow I snapped the side of it Oh well I guess I will have to find one now. Would those valve clearances have made it hard to start do you think ?
Just smooth off the edge and it should be alright. When we say 'tight' valve clearances we mean no to almost no clearances at all, so those slightly smaller may have effected but I doubt it. The wrong jets might be your starting problem so put back to standard and see how it goes.
Yes, if it does still have the wrong jets in it I’m sure it would affect it. The thing I don’t get is why it would idle ok once warmed up. I guess it is worth pulling them out and checking them over though. As for the rocker there is not quite enough edge left to locate it on the top of the valve stem, and there is nothing holding them in place other than that as far as I can see, so I’m worried it might work it’s way out of position and fall out as it is now.
Same rockers as used on '88-07 EX250 Ninja 250. Best to use torque-wrench on those locknuts. I'm looking into making some sort of holding device to prevent them from twisting when tightening. I always keep couple extras on-hand as I have no idea how many of them's been abused in past. If you can't find replacements, I can send you some.
Ok thanks mate! I’m not sure if I can ask in this forum, ( feel free to inform me if it not allowed) but where is the best place to find parts in Australia? Go to a dealer? Or are there online stores for parts like this?
