Being new to the biking fraternity I am curious...what is the highest bhp possible for a 250cc bike? Given all the mods and tweaking possible what is the highest achievable that you have achieved or heard of?

Ok,OK I'm done... If we are talking street legal mods.. many factors come into play IE: carbs or fuel injection, the plethora of different types of exhaust, High flow air filters, and if you have a fuel injected bike I'm sure someone has cracked a computer or made a power commander that allows a few more HP to be squeezed out of the bike...

Thanks Tim and Greyimport....I have already had a look at the links you both provided. Classic! It's amazing how with some knowledge how fast these bikes can go. I'm looking forward to seeing what people have achieved..

Well the Honda RSW250 apparently could get between 90-100 HP. Considering the weight that would be quite impressive.

As for production bikes, an NSR can typically nudge on the 70HP barrier but the bike would probably be on the cusp of grenading since it would be so highly strung.

In stock form the cbr250, zxr250, fzr250 and gsxr250 all had 45 horsepower from the factory with 4 stroke engines, some 2 strokes were around the 63 hp mark from the factory

2 cylinder 2 stroke road bikes like the 2004 Aprilia RS250 over 60hp.
Yamaha claimed 65hp at 12,000rpm for the 1987 F3 race kit for their TZR250 road bike.
Yamaha claimed 93hp at 12,500rpm for the 2003 to 2009 TZ250 road racer.
The last of the factory works 250cc road racers like the Aprilia RSA 250 were over 100hp.

Modern Moto3 250cc bikes claim to make around 55HP which is probably understated. Web chatter claims Honda is closer to 60+HP and the KTM 65HP. The Mahindra is probably 55HP.

Also, the Moto3 250cc bikes are a single cylinder 4-stroke and the control ECU limits them to 14,000rpm. The engines get rebuilt after 2000km. We've had this chat on this forum before, and I would love to see what a leading manufacturer could achieve with a 250cc 4-stroke and no limits.

There are lots of ways to increase power output, but not all of this technology gets put into a 250cc bike. You can have 5 valves per cylinder, two spark plugs per cylinder, injectors with finer/more nozzles for better fuel atomisation, lightweight rods and pistons... and much more.

I don't think it's a question you can answer clearly, too complicated with too many variables.

When the time comes that you have an itch for more bhp, probably time to upgrade from a 250cc. It's less complicated and probably cheaper.
