    Hi All!

I've been a silent member of this forum for a year, I found out while doing some research about 4inline 250's.

I'll be a bit more active from now on, I'm planning to turn it into a track bike once the rego expires next year, so I'll bother you with nonsense and dumb questions.

So far I've been trying to make it reliable (it's my daily commuting bike) and improving the performance bit by bit.

I care more about bettering this:

    Quimbo_at_Broadford.jpg

    Than fixing this:

I plan to do all the works on the bike at the Kustom Kommune, are any of you a member? I think I'm the only one with this type of bikes going around there...

A bit of my background: I come from Barcelona (Spain) from a family of petrol heads. With my brother as teenagers loved this little Japanese machines, and when I moved here and found out they were some around didn't missed the chance to get my hands on one!

I worked with the KRT SBK guys ages ago when they first started in the 600cc class, this should give you an idea of the sort of motomaniac your dealing with...

    See you around guys/gals, Cheers!

For fixing cracked fairings or fairings with broken mounting tabs etc, there is this stuff called Q-Bond that we use at my work. It's basically a powder and superglue, when mixed it sets instantly and is very strong.

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Q-BOND-SMALL-Plastic-Repair-Kit-Qbond-Bonding-Glue-/322562162155

I repaired the broken tab on my ZXR's tail fairing where it pops into the fuel tank with this stuff.

Looks like you have a Malaysian ZXR in silver with the orange/black decals? Would like to see some more pictures of it. Does it have a 240km/h speedo on it?

Since you track it, you should know that all these 250cc 4 pot screamers have a limiting circuit built into the speedo that stops you exceeding 180km/h. The 240km/h speedo doesn't have this. To stop it, you have to wire a resistor into the circuit or operate on the speedo to stop the hall effect sensor from doing its job. Fiddly work.

Hola Qimbo. Checkout Club250 (https://www.facebook.com/club250cc/) if you want to meet up with other Melbourne 2fiftycc riders. I'm guessing someone there is a member of the Kustom Kommune. What suburb are you in?

Thanks for the tip Linkin! The Previous owner did a number on the fairings, first scratching with a low speed drop then trying to fix it with a very bad sanding. Couldn't be bothered much to be fair...planning it to be a track bike, the looks of plastics should be the last priority, I'll damage them more for sure!!

However I'm very curious about your COP upgrade for the ignition, will ask you more questions down the (trackbike) road.

Yes it is Malaysian indeed! Speedo top mark is 240km/h, been far above 180km/h without problems. Will post some pictures tomorrow. It's in a pretty good nick, valves were done short before I got it, as well as carbies synched and rejetted. Starts on the first go even in winter, no hesitation or flat spots. Some stuff is obviously old but nothing is damaged (as far as I've been digging). Will be replacing/optimising/upgrading parts here and there with the time.

Pretty happy with it to be fair!

Hi Frankster! Yes, I'm aware of the club, actually I attended the last ride. You can see my bike in the pictures.

I've been pretty lucky with the Kustom Kommune relocation in Abbotsford, I live in Richmond, just 5 minutes away. I'll give a good go to my membership I can tell you haha!

    Happy New Year Guys!

I'm planning to give the ZXR some deep maintenance in areas that provably have been neglected thru years...or at least it looks like that.

Plugs, oil and coolant aside, does anyone here know where to get wheel bearings around Melbourne? I was thinking going hybrid ceramic, anyone has any suggestion/experience with them?

Also, I was thinking on taking a look at the Cam Chain tensioner. I got the bike with 59K and now being over the 70K I'd like to know if there's any adjustment to be done around there.

Braided lines will also be installed. Anything else that you may suggest?

    Cheers!

Find a good bearing supply shop for bearings and new seals. Bring the old ones with you, or get the numbers off them. No idea about ceramic/hybrid bearings that you speak of...

The cam tensioner is an automatic type and they are known to wear out easily, I used a GPX250 one which has been going strong with no issues so far. Part number 12048-1106. Try partzilla or megazip if you cant get one from your local dealer. I think it was @zixxer or @sharky to said they change it out every 10,000km as preventitive maintanenace.

When you do the coolant, make sure you bleed the air out of the system with the bleed screws. See the service manual.

I give it a clean about every 10k & check for scouring inside from the bearing, once there's scouring it should be replaced, check your rocker cover for chain gouge, thats the giveaway sign. A cam chain should be changed once in its life I think also & 60k seems about right, I done mine & its much quiter & you can really notice how rattly the old chain is. try greyimportspares.com for your new parts.

Thanks for the advice guys, much appreciated! The cam chain job sounds a bit too big for me but will definitely check the condition of it and proceed from there.

Welcome mate. I have an open shed to the Club250 members, so if you wanted to jump on board or get club rego you can bring the bike to me in Mooroolbark and I'll help you with cam chain tensioner stuff etc. I have a Z300 coming around tomorrow for a major service so starting to expand my work beyond my FZR collection haha.

Aaaand this is it, no Great Ocean Road Ride for me this weekend....

As aforementioned, I planned swapping spark plugs, oil and cooling...then surprises arise. Rubber on Plug n. 4 was done and as I pulled it out I ended with the cable on the hand and the plug still in. A bit of wrestling with the pliers and got it out. Still could run with it, not in wet but manageable.

    2FE5621D-7D27-43D7-95F2-79A2F278A7A7.JPG

Then, oil change. Apparently the thread on the sump was done and the last guys that did the oil managed to keep it sealed with some sort of putty paste. 'WTF...WTF?!?!' was what I was thinking as I unscrewed the bolt...

I'll go to the wreckers today for the plug and I'll try to get a cheap sump oil pan. Depending on the price I may try to re-thread it.

If there's anyone around Melbourne with one laying around I can happily buy it from you.

    6C7E3D96-D759-443F-9A7E-192FBC922BC2.JPG

Gasket will be what will set me back, can't buy it locally so I'll have to go online, which means at least a week of wait.

On the positive side, now I'll have time to finally mount the braided lines, clean some stuff with the pressure washer, etc etc.

Everyone @ Club250, have fun tomorrow and rev it up for me at least once please!

    Cheers

You can buy oil jointing gasket paper from Bursons (get 0.8mm) and make your own gaskets. Sump crush washers are available from any bike shop. The gasket goo is normally some sort of high heat silicone, you can probably use a thin layer of that again if you need to.

In terms of parts, try the club group - I know there's a guy with track ZXR's who potentially has parts so try your luck. I would just wrap the plug lead in electrical tape and keep going (but that's me lol). You could also try plumbing thread tape on the sump plug. Good luck :)
