I was actually thinking it may have been white vinegar of citric acid I used, anyway the dark smut wiped off once they'd been in it for a bit.

I'm looking forward to seeing it run down the strip. Even with ballast, it should run 9's without trying too hard. Low 8's should be your goal! From what I have found online, the bike was apparently capable of running 12.9 quarter mile times; although that test rider was probably Japanese, the same weight as @Linkin and was well versed at kamikazi launches and clutchless changes! What's the real HP figure for this thing? Spec says 59hp, but a few articles and specs (see below) mention 64rwhp!

Personally, I think 59hp is plenty, but the ZXR400 made between 61hp and 64hp, so we'll see how she runs. It will be interesting to see how much weight you manage to pull out of the bike. I'd be putting FZR250 decals/stickers all over it just for shits and giggles!

Almost plated my cbr250rr with "250lol", but have also been tempted to plate my xr650r as "itsa250"

It will be interesting to see how it pulls ..... currently it only has yamaha and deltabox decals on it , so it will be a mystery package to most.
I once had a guy approach me at a servo and ask me if the FZR250 was a 2 stroke

As long as these 400 carbs dont act like the 250 puss buckets , then Ill be impressed wateva happens.
They are both 1989 models and hopefully thats where the similarity ends.

Summer , the new lounge, cricket and a problematic back are not helping the ballast situation either :fuckyou:

This is the new arrangement for the right hand mission control .... new master and switchgear and an FZ8 throttle

I hope so too. Too bad you can't replace those Mikunis with something from Keihin or a flat-slide setup. One step at a time. keep up the good work Chief.

I was reading the following article in my hunt for an answer to the "is it 59hp or 64hp" question. It seems the FZR400R had lighter pistons and few other bits that might give it a bit more poke. Good, if not longish, read...

Yzf600 Keihin carbs [34.5mm bore] are racked correctly and will bolt straight in, not sure if the manifolds and the form at the head are different; circular -v- oval?

Im going to put spikes on the bottom of my boots .... green light , lift your feet ;)

@Frankster .... Ive read some of that article .... interesting that they decided to build a racer first then turn it into a production bike , opposite to the others .... and then test it on the road in real time instead of everyone else who were road testing the new bikes on a track

A set of "SP" (or similar) carbs would be an interesting venture
This thing has to prove itself in stock form yet before it gets any goodies

I pulled apart the cooling system to install some Litetek goodness (and it had an oring leak)
Its remarkably clean everywhere .... miracle ... so Ill leave the water pump for now
Pulled the rad and flushed it and tossed the fan as it weighs a ton
Also gave me access to the "front" of the motor which is a bunfight
Theres a coating of either road grime or oil or both .... Im guessing the valve cover is leaking but gaskets dont look very available so Ill leave that for now
It will also give me better access to the cross threaded plug hole ... just waiting on delivery of the thread chaser (as opposed to a tap)

Coming along nicely Chief. Do you have the specs for the coils on that thing? You might be able to run the COP setup you have (for the ZXR) if the primary and secondary windings are within spec for the COP Denso Coils.

What are you doing about plastics for the bike?

Theres no manual for this model but Im guessing the others would be the same ... or the FZR600

The FZR250 has COPS too and Im guessing the same connections

A front stay is supposedly unobtainable and I have to look further into getting a race tail ..... otherwise its nakedness 101

    Try this link...

    http://www.400greybike.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=43

A couple of the links are broken, but I just downloaded the manual from the first URL and it seems fine, even if it's not the same model as yours. The MODIFICATIONS gallery link has a few options for body bits that might help. R6 tail seems popular & looks sharp too (I think).

I have all the FZR manuals and parts catalogues from the 250 to the 1000 from when I first bought the 250 .... some of the English 400 info was useful for working on the 250 (Jap only manuals)

I see a link to the old FZR250.com .... we have that forum archived here :D

    https://www.2fiftycc.com/index.php?forums/fzr250-com-archives.137/

Ive used that Madsi Racing site a few times .... :thumb_ups:

An R6 race tail would be readily available but I wonder how much the subframe needs work or even replacing
I think the frames and subframes change thru the 400 models also

    https://www.madsi.co.uk/fairing.aspx

A race tail from here will probably be the easiest choice ... and its in Oz

The Armour Body Kit looks trick. One of the Gallery bikes on the 400greybike website was running a very similar kit; along with a heap of other mods including an R6 front end. It always bemuses me why Kawasaki went with USD forks on the ZXR250. If a great handling bike like the FZR400 can get away with standard forks, then you would think the ZXR250 could have too. Those bloody heavy forks just annoy me. I must get around to trying to retro a ZZR250 front end onto the ZXR250 drag bike.

Yep. Know the story all too well.
That is the reason why my little RC162 tribute bike still does not have a fairing on it.
The freight cost was going to be more than the fairing cost.
Unfortunately at the time I was unable to find a suitable fairing locally.

Just go Naked.... the FZR400... not @GreyImport :idk:
After all... it is only ever going to go 1/8th Mile... a fairing wont do much to your top speed over that distance and it is easier to work on should it require it... or should that be when it needs it :)

In my opinion, get the bike running properly and then worry about aesthetics. Zero point in having a great looking bike that runs like crap!

Again, in my opinion, naked bikes are designed to look good naked.

    TYGA 3.JPG

Taking the plastics off a fairing bike often makes them look pretty ordinary. I take Andy's point about maintenance and access, but in the end you kind of have to have something that looks good standing still, don't you? In a perfect world, you'd have a one-piece fairing held on with a hand fall of dzus fasteners. I'm sure the Chief has already thought of what 'look' he's going for.

    TYGA 1.jpg

I guess you could race this bike without its fairing, but I wouldn't.
