So thought I might start an on going project thread for my FZR250 track bike.
Little history behind it, bought it as a piece of $#!1 $600 gumtree bargain which barely ran and looked like this...

Stripped it down completely and started cleaning it all out.

The Carbs were disgusting, cleaned them inside and out and replaced all the rubber seals. I've lost count of how many bolts i've replaced because I've rounded them trying to get them undone after never being touched for 20 years!

A cheap set of chinese fairings later and it started looking like a real bike!

Take out the headlights and some yellow 100 mile an hour tape and BAM instant race fairings :p

Actually didn't do too bad. A few tuning issues and it was running really rich but with a bit of a fiddle leaned it out nicely. Replaced the exhaust with a carbon ballistic pipe from a Hayabusa (it was free so I made it fit :p)

Suspension was very lacking and it wallowed in the corners but man it was a hell of a lot of fun to fang around the track.
Baskerville Raceway in Hobart is an awesome little tight and technical track with a short straight which is perfectly suited to these smaller capacity machines, where high corner speed is key!

Unfortunatly, due to the lack of suspension about a month ago I faceplanted at the end of the straight under hard braking, the front end bottomed out the front wheel locked and I slid into the dirt. The bike did a flip and ended up looking a little sorry for itself.

So back to a project bike it went!!

The list of things wasn't too long, but it was suprisingly time consuming considering I had less than a month to get the bike race ready for the first round of the Tassie Lites Racing Series.

    I had to:

    Cut the subframe,
replace front springs with 85kg linear springs. & change fork oil
    Install new 06 R6 shock
    repair the damaged exhaust
    replace the frame sliders
    replace the bars
    replace broken brake lever
    repair damaged engine protectors
    relocate coolant reservoir
    install liquid catchcan
    race spec lockwire bike
    replace oil & filter
    fit new fibreglass fairings.
    rebleed front brakes.
    replace left footpeg
replace tyres with sticker rubber (dunlop alpha 13front & 12Rear)
    Install sharkfin

Ok, so maybe the list was a little longer than I remembered. I did take three days off work to make sure I had enough time.

    More pics?

Shark fins are good things. I like all of my fingers.

The Shock was a little fiddly to get in but basically bolted straight up. There is more of a story to the shock too I'll go into that a bit later on....someone remind me please.

The bar was only a little bit bent :D Eagle eyed people will also see the cut subframe in this photo. I didn't have a better one on my phone so this one will have to do.

Tail fairing is off a TZ250 GP bike, a little skinnier than standard but fitted up fairly easily.

Front fairing is off an Aprillia RS250, its a lot narrower than stock but fits almost perfectly with a little modification.

Final product in the pits on raceday!

Now I just need to learn how to ride! It feels wierd having a stable bike :p

Ah, Interesting. I can recall reading that somewhere else. Doens't really matter now, after I was done removing the third screw, I'd already decided that I'd replace them all.

Might be something to look at investing in, in the future.

    Cheers mate,

I will admit I have been following your FZR Track bike thread,
    http://www.2fiftycc.com/index.php?threads/my-recent-changes-fzr-track-bike.2636/

since I joined and I'm salivating over those rearsets. I'd love it if you wanted to share some of your "secret engine work" or any other cool mods that you have done. Send me a PM on here or shoot me one on FB if you don't want to public ;D

    Hi Generic,

I would advise getting the correct rated fork springs rather than getting the adjustable pre load fork end caps. You can always adjust the spacer inside if required..

I've already replaced the springs and cut the spacer to give me a 25mm front sag, but I'd like the adjustability to be able to adjust it while at the track without swapping spacers.

Once the sag has been set correctly, you should not need to change it? I also think your sag might be a teeny bit too much. I have my sag at 15mm (The recommended sag is 20mm I think) and the front is fantastic! No diving under hard braking at all. It's all up to the rider and what they feel comfortable with in the end though..

Yeah ok, you're probably right it probably is too soft. Baskerville is a pretty bumpy track which is why I've gone for the softer side, but I guess that's where the adjustable fork caps would come in handy as I could dial it in at the track and test out what works the best for me.

This all being said, this was the first time I'd ridden the bike since upgrading the stock suspension so it all felt amazing to me!

Can't wait for the next track day to have another crack!

Another track day at Baskeville has passed and I'm really happy with the improvements on the bike! I tried adding a bit more preload to the bike as @fnq_fzr suggested and I'm happy to put my tail between my legs cause it did make a massive difference, could probably go a little more than I did too!

I've got myself down to a consistent 69 sec laptime so I'm pretty happy with myself. Still not quite at the 64 sec of @Boydie77 and I know I've got a long way to go but I'm coming for you mate :p

Any suggestions on how to improve the rebound on the front? Everything else is feeling ok, but it still has a bit of a pogo at the front.

Slightly unrelated.....have enlisted the help of a mate to paint the fizzer fairings for me. I haven't really painted anything before and when I have it was a dodge rattle can job.

All this talk of painting has inspired me to repair the CBR600 fairings and paint them aswell. There wasn't a single fairing that wasn't cracked and needed some fibreglass repair. The hole in the front fairing and tank cover weren't easy to fix.

Protip: don't get on the power too soon, it doesn't matter on the fizzer but the 600 will bite you hard and you'll do flips and s#!t :p

So good news and bad news.

Finally finished painting the Fizzer and she looks the goods.
Took nearly a whole day to mask up the fairings and figure out the design I wanted but it was worth it in the end.

Obviously the war paint worked as straight off the bat I was doing consistent 69sec laps on Saturday practice then come race day in qualifying I pushed myself down into the 67's!

Qualified 5th in the Lites, first of the 4-stroke pack, with only the smell of 2-stroke in front of me.
One of the front runners unfortunately crashed out in another class he was running in, so I was 4th on the grid.

Pipped one of the 2-strokes off the line and somehow managed to hold them off for the rest of the run for a 3rd!

    Now for the bad.....

On the warmup out laps of the second Lites race, coming down the back straight, all of a sudden I heard a massive exhaust sounding noise coming from the front of the bike, it sounded like the headers had come off! I quickly pulled into the pits and quickly came to terms that my day was done.

Still haven't had a chance to do a leak down test but from the aggressive tick and lack of heat from the exhaust on cylinder two I'm guessing that I've dropped an exhaust valve. Hopefully it's nothing worse like a hole in a piston, but until I pull it apart I won't know.

Good thing I've got 3 months before the next race day down here.
