After doing pistons 3 cyls are at 170, one's 60. Most hacks for getting at valve stem collets involve side entry, yeah right. Before I grind away my spring compressor to get at em from above (with some 19mm copper pipe for clearance), is there an obviously easier solution pls? FZR400 manual specs YM-04108 and YM-04114 (one's on relevant page, t'other is in special tools) as attachment to tool, but unkn in Yam parts system. It's 19.5mm, so probably good for ours too
A normal old style valve spring compressor just wont work on these sewing machine engines... You need to get something like this. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2346141...KM6FP9mSmDdhFjSESX+sNAIeeQ==|tkp:BFBM5pCE9ZRh
If you have a large/long enough C clamp at home you can pretty easily DIY a compressor just like Andych posted...simply attach a cut apart socket (or your copper pipe) to make access holes then either get a helper to hold the adapter in place as you screw the clamp down, or find a way to attach the adapter to the clamps pad (weld/solder/epoxy) This is how i was able to do DOHC car heads that the old school compressors won't fit in. Just had to make a new adapter few weeks back to do my xt225 valves. It can also help to put a rag or some kind of cushion on the valve head to limit knicks or gouges in the combustion chamber.
I think the cost fo a replacement large G clamp and socket would exceed the $25 for the kit... but each to their own I guess.
Haha you're right on that one Andych. I thought $25 for a kit was a great price, but no idea what the OPs timeline is like. For me I am out in the country, often working late in to the night with the determination to be done ASAP so DIY tools often happen here LOL My tool was hastily scrounged together in florida yrs ago while rebuilding a mitsubishi head in a hotel room (poor cleaning ladies must've thought i was crazy rebuilding a head in a hotel, but working on the road as a non-alcoholic, nights on the road were just too quiet w/o a project to do) clamp was under $10 at a china import tool store, & I got LOTS of spare El cheapo sockets. A true tool made for the job for $25 sure is a good deal, but for the less patient among us, not waiting a week is sometimes priceless especially if you already have a clamp & junk sockets, just dont weld it all over & permanently fuse things, just small tack weld to hold things for the job & all but the cut apart socket is still useable so possibly its a FREE tool for some !
I use an Irwin plastic clamps, one of the larger ones with adequate reach and pressure AND a piece of plastic conduit because I don't want anything harder than the aluminium near those cam tunnels and where the buckets run - works a treat
The Ballard's MXStore.com valve compressor fits beautifully and comes with half a dozen different sizes you can swap over that suit different engines. 60 bucks and free shipping Sent from my SM-G991B using Tapatalk
