The Queensland Government has announced a number of changes to Queensland’s motorcycle licencing system to be rolled out from October 2016. These changes aim to improve motorcycle rider safety by helping to ensure testing and licensing requirements adequately prepare novice riders and encourage skill development.

    The changes include:

    • Completing a practical pre-learner course before obtaining a motorcycle learner licence.
    • Requiring learner riders to hold their motorcycle learner licence for at least 3 months before progressing to an RE licence.
    • Extending the minimum time to hold an RE licence before progressing to an R licence from 1 to 2 years.
    • Removing the restriction prohibiting R licence holders from carrying passengers for the first year of holding an R licence.
    • Increasing standardisation in the Q-Ride courses and incorporating a stronger emphasis on behaviour and higher order skills.
Updates will be provided as these initiatives are implemented.

The changes were developed considering feedback provided by Queenslanders through the Motorcycle licensing discussion paper and online survey released on the Get involved website on 27 July 2015.

The Results of consultation: Motorcycle licensing discussion paper summarises the results of the community consultation.

here is a question for the forum.
I'm currently on my RE licence having qualified through qride in October last year. I have been aiming to do my R upgrade course after my 12 months is up in October this year. Does this mean I will be stuck on RE for another 12 months!? or would those new rules only start applying for people getting new RE licences from Oct 16?
    Thoughts?

I'm pretty sure that you will have needed to complete your R licence course before the new laws come into force. Otherwise, yes you are stuck on the RE licence for another 12 months

speaking with a qride instructor on a diff site and @ZDave should be good to go and do his R's in OCT. seems the new laws will only apply to people not already with a L or RE licence

Another case of Government poking there noses into peoples lives once again
More red tape, more BS, just never stops.

Why don't they...the government look at some real issues such as teaching motor vehicle drivers to be more considerate of motorcycle riders and accept that they have a right to be on the road.

These lam excuses....sorry mate, didn't see you should be dealt with by suspension of license until an optometrist has verified that eye sight is good :lolsign:

    Rant over......Have a nice day :p

    I agree Phil.
Last time I had a 'chat' with the SMIDSY driver I asked if he needed glasses? 'No, my eyesight is good' he replied. I then told him he should be charged with neg driving for failing to look at which he had no reply.
He had to be one or the other- bad eyes or not looking.
Pr**k should have been charged with something by the cops.

I can understand the changes except the practical test BEFORE your learners. You don't need one before you drive a 1-2 ton block of metal, but for a motorcycle you basically need to be Valentino Rossi before you're allowed on the roads. If the Government could accurately get near-misses data maybe they would adjust the rules for drivers.

Don't see your problem. We have to do a practical test to see if you can at least operate the controls and keep a bike upright before getting 'L's and being allowed onto the road.

IMHO, the issue isn't the RE guys trying to go to a R licence. It is the new riders being unleashed on the roads. Many pass a 4-6 hour Q-Ride test, but have no roadcraft. I believe a log book system similar to a car should be in place. This way the new riders should have a real understanding.

And yes @Phil I 100% agree. Car driver education is sadly lacking - especially lane splitting.
