i noticed late last week and over the weekend that my 3ln was starting to leak oil from what seemed to be the sprocket seal. the 300+km spin on sunday did it no good, made it worse actually so i decided do drop it into my mechanic to have the seal replaced, no big job thought id be motoring again by thursday and i still have my tdr 125 so i wouldnt be bikeless.

also, after 2 months of advertising my tdr for sale, the first potential buyers were to view it this week.

rang the mechanic today, the sleeve that is between the drive shaft and the sprocket seal to stop the seal from being screwed out had been welded/glued/welded itself to the drive shaft and was screwing out the seal as it turned with the drive shaft. the guy tried everything he could until late last night to get it off, including turning up a cog from a steel bar and welding it to the sleeve, it wouldnt budge, the welds just kept on breaking.

the only solution now is to drop the engine out and strip it down to take out the drive shaft and get it off by whatever means possible. then replace all gaskets and rebuild the engine.

all over a poxy oil seal.

i estimate it will cost somewhere between €500 and €1,000, the vast majority of this being labour costs, even though i get on very well with my mechanic and i know he will look after me as best he can. but he could easily do a full service on 10 or more bikes in the time its going to take him to do it.

so to cut a long story short, im broke, i owe out a fortune for a bike i cannot ride, i forked out all €2000 of my 21st birthday money and im back on a poxy 125!!!

has anyone tried cramming an fzr 400 engine into a 3ln before? because at the moment a new engine could be a cheaper option and while im at it i may as well make it a 400. i might also sell my farings to pay for some of the cost and make it a streetfighter.

any suggestions/sympathy/miracles are much appriciated

p.s. i have it 1 month today

Your backed against the wall at the moment, but
I feel you'll sort something out, and have your bike repaired,
and be out riding her as soon as.

The guys and gals on here will have suggestions that may help.

As for miracles ..... who knows !!

Bad luck for sure. Parts are gonna be hard to come by as well. For either the 250 or the 400.

o man that really sucks, if i see any 3ln engines going nearby i'll give you a shout

i think trawling breakers may be you're best option, hope for an engine someone's dying to get rid of

liamo, i may have something for ya, i just gave dk spares a call about some parts and asked about a 3ln engine, they said to give 'em a call back around 4.30 and he can confirm if it's there (has to hunt around and see if they've still got it....
if you want to ring them back yourself i can pm you the name and number, if not i'll post back around half 4 and let you know the price he wants

** have you considered doing the work yourself?, at least if you can get hold of a new engine it's an easy sway and you can give it a service when it arrives **

I know that a complete set of gaskets for my bike is $200-250 USD. If you are going to be in there, rings, valve grind, valve guide seals, might as well do it right... Hell.... big bore it...

hey, i got back to DK and their still checking if it's a 3ln engine (i told them what to look for so shouldn't be too long, if you need one)
as for the screen check glen shiel out, i've got a black screen from them and it's really really good http://glenshiel.co.uk/acatalog/Catalog ... UP_83.html

i dont think its going to need rings or bearings or any of that stuff, the worst part of it is that irish weather is nutoriously shitty and this week was gorgeous, i know that its gonna piss rain non stop when i get the fzr back.

as for the rebore, one of my friends thinks im mad not to but it wouldnt be cheap at all and im already in financial ruin having just paid 4 grand between buying the bike and insuring it and now facing a bill of 1000 of our fine eurpoean dollars just to get it back!!! on the plus side, i know that the engine will have been rebuilt by one of the best and most respected motorbike mechanics on this fair island.

UPDATE!!!

there is a god!! its been a month to the day since i last rode my baby and she's finally on the mend!! tha bastard of a crank seal finally arrived yesterday and the rebuilding work has begun. i should be motoring again by the weekend. now for the bad bit ... the cost. here's whats been done ...

engine drained of all fluids and dropped from frame
engine stripped right down and seized bushing machined off.
engine put back together with all new seals & gaskets (and bushing)(
new plugs, oil filter, air filter and oil
new clutch plates
full set of new indicators
new front screen

so she'll be in top condition when i get her back.

i hope beano and DublinFZR will be around to help me clock up a few miles on it, id only done 1000km since i bought it before it went in!!!

Shes worth every cent.
You'll have peace of mind too, knowing what work has been done.

When I spend money on my "Celia" (yeah!! thats her name)
shes worth it, I feel shes a reflection of myself.

Celia has her moments, all though 99 0/0 of our rides are hassel free.
If I look after her, she'll look after me.

it is with great anger and sadness that i resurect this post, my bike is knackered again.
out for a spin with a biker i met on an irish forum last night, while cruising along the motorway, suddenly something just didnt feel right with the bike. i cant put my finger on what i felt but i just got a feelin that somethin was wrong. a second later the oil light flickered twice and suddenly a loud clacking/clunking noise started coming from the engine, i pulled over to check it out, i tried to wave at tony but he didnt see me in his mirror so he kept goin. oil looked kinda low, just at the min mark.

so to cut a long story short tony came back for me, we went off and got some oil, put it in and crawled the 30 km home on the hard shoulder at 60kph in 6th, all while the engine continued to clack away.

it has had a minor weep of oil coming from it since the rebuild, and the bike was booked in to get that sorted today but now it looks like another rebuild maybe in order as im fairly sure that at least a few bearings are fooked.

i had been assured by my mechanic that the weep wasnt too bad and that i didnt need to drive it slow or avoid driving when possible. so its been dropped down today, dunno when il hear from it again.

i really think the bike is cursed and am strongly considering selling it when its sorted, i dont think il ever feel comfortable riding it again, ill be expecting the engine to die on me any minute.

if thats wrong, then im cursed!! sorry to put a downer on the site boys but im really pissed off

How long since the rebuilt? If not long, look for warranty work.

That's bad luck bro. I'd sell the bike ASAP and save for a new one.
