Hey All Any RZ250 owners on here, I bought one today (1984) and will be looking for a few parts and advice. Thanks Chris
Grr, I won the RZ on ebay last Wednesday, still no contact from the seller, I hope it doesnt fall through. :icon_scratch:
Phil and I picked up the mighty RZ250 last night and to be honest, its in better nick than first thought, we hooked up a battery and the elctrics are fine, the old fuel has been drained and we are now giving the carbies a clean, there was an insane amount of white mush in there, but we are working through it. All going well, we should have her going this arvo. Im super impressed with the condition, you can tell the previous owner really looked after her  Chris
nice one Chris  like the Elsie before it they are a great bike and fun to ride have nice powerband you can be a total hoon on them too if f you give it some beans they just love to wheelie  just watch for the olice: when you do
Well she runs, and she runs quite well :occasion14: Carbies have had the royal treatment , we have found the tacho doesnt wokr and thats about it, everything else is sweet. and she rides okay too , heres a few pics !!!
I have a theory why your tacho doesn't work. And a possible solution. It seems your engine bottom end and instruments are from a 1985 RZ350R. Your bike originally had a cable tacho but the 1AH engine did not have a cable drive. The electric tacho is a good thing because the cable sucks up to 3hp. Electric tacos that fit your instrument housing have either a grey or black/yellow or an orange wire to provide the revs signal. Your ignition is unlikely to provide either the grey or black/yellow signal wire so it appears you are stuck. BUT fortunately there are tachos from around 1989 that have an orange signal wire that will fit in your instrument case. The orange signal wire connects to the orange wire input to your ignition coil. But these tachos are almost impossible to find. I have one from a 1989 TZR250 2XT. If you can get your bike down to Canberra sometime we can swap it over and get it to work. The other thing I noticed is your inlet manifolds are RD400. The RDLC manifolds have a joiner tube that improves midrange performance. The RZ250 has a larger joiner tube that is even better. The RZ250 and RZ350 joiner tubes are the same but the manifolds and reeds are different. I could fix you up with joiner tube manifolds too when you come for your visit if you want.
Hey mboddy Interesting theroy there and I like it, I did put a multimeter on the orange and black wire on the back of the tacho and its definately getting voltage, I just made an assumption that the tacho itself was playing up. We did remove the tank and igniotion coil yesterday and have noticed that the harness has been hacked apart and there are is lots of black tape and joins. and yes your right the engine casing is stamped 1AH, I wonder if they are 250 or 350 barrells ? Is there any way of finding out without removing the barrels ? thanks Chris
They have the cc in raised characters at the base of the cylinders on each side. I couldn't quite read them from your pics. ps. If you do come for a visit I'll show you my Brazilian.
thanks for that, definately 250cc barrels.. Im up in Brisbane , long way to drive to Canberra though , I will have to have along hard think about what we want to achieve from this bike, as the numbers dont match and the more i look I can see its a bitzer, at this point I cant see me pooring heaps of cash into it to get it back to original. Im so glad your Brazillian is a bike...
If you want a nice original bike you would be best to pay $2500 to $3000 plus for a low kilometres bike around 1987 that has not been apart. But your bike would be a great rider bike. Unlike your NSR, the RZs are the last of the all round bikes that are reliable for high usage and can be commuters, tourers, and are still quite sporty. Don't try to make it the ultimate sports bike, it will never be a NSR. Yours doesn't look like too much of a bitsa and most people wouldn't notice anyway. You could make a few 'period sympathetic' modifications without guilt. You should focus on correcting the faults of the age rather than adding bling. The only bling you need is a nice set of pipes. My RD350R has Progressive fork springs and will get Mikes XS valves when I pull the forks apart. Mike's XS valves are only about $50 and make the biggest improvement to the handling. You already have a braided front brake line. But the single piston front callipers are pretty ordinary and are high maintenance. A bent pair of later RZ forks should cost nothing and can donate their sliders as they go straight on. This will let you use the later twin piston callipers which are great with new EBC green pads. Or leave the fork sliders and make up adapters to fit a pair of Brembo F05s or the Grimeca copies. A new 12mm Brembo Rec master cylinder is only about $120 from Bevel Heaven and is perfectly matched to a pair of F05s. Anything else you do to the bike would make bugger all difference. Don't fit fat tyres - it just stuffs up the handling.
Hey All After what seemed like an eternity we arrived at our destination in the dark. I'm referring to Chris and I collecting a Yamaha RZ250. Photos on line sometime can be deceiving, but not this time. As the garage door rose our impression was, we have a winner. The bike looked really good for it's age and had been looked after. Loaded her up and headed back to Chris's place. After a quick check we removed the carbs and took one each for cleaning purpose. Why did I get the one with molasses in the bottom, could easily have spooned it out it was that thick. Took me considerably longer to clean than normal but the end result was she fired up and ran pretty well for a bike that had been parked up for sometime. As mentioned prior, the tacho wasn't operational but thanks to MBODDY keen eye the culprit has been identified. Not 100% certain what we intend to do with this bike yet, think Chris is in 2 minds. It would make a great project bike I think. Certainly brings back memories, good ones at that. :-\ Phil
